I organize my desk, or try to clean. That usually gets me bored enough that I fall asleep!

Count sheep or watch Martha! on TIVO!

Hi Jen –
Funny, I was bored, restless, not sleeping last night either. I do the same thing…aimlessly surf the web, reading blogs, mainly food ones. Pretty Exciting huh? Finally I went back up to try and go to bed at 2AM, but of course my husband was snoring SO loudly it still took a while for me to fall asleep. Have a great (yet sleep deprived!) day!
WI Girl says
Get up! It just makes it worse if you stay in bed and keep trying…looking at the clock every other minute…
Olivia says
If I wake up in the middle of the night, I toss and turn and just lay there. Sometimes I think of the answer to a problem but mostly just replay situations that bug me over and over and over. If I can’t get to sleep and it’s early enough, my drug of choice is ambien 🙂
Jane M says
So what time is it that are you up til???? Me, I just worry and give up trying to fall asleep and start my day which is around 4 in the morning. I also try to get myself to the gym that night to really tire me out and then I can sleep!
Good Luck — and what’s on your mind that you can’t sleep?
D Vegas says
Try some “Special Cookies”!!
grandmajo says
I go directly to whatever.
Nikki V says
I do the same thing you’re doing…surfing the web. Discovered an interesting podcast called “Here on Earth” – it’s a part of WI Public Radio (where I’m from) and they’re really interesting… check it out next time you can’t sleep.
And drink some chamomile tea. 🙂
Kara says
READ! Watch terribly boring t.v. such as that over the top outdoorsy/naturey stuff on national geographic channel, play with my cat, listen to music, leaving your bedroom and moving to a different, dark quiet room supposedly works, but I am too scared to do that in the middle of the night. Good luck jenny! <33

when i can not sleep.i try sex.if that dont work i take a xanax and pass out…. or read a book
sheila says
think about the most boring people you know, or eat a special cookie. Jennifer I am just kidding about the cookie, the story was really funny. Just relax, breathe very deeply. Night
philly dave says
Web surfing is OK when you can’t sleep just as long as you’re buying stuff from wholesomewear.com!!! Seriously though, when I can’t sleep I tend to read a book or write in my journal. I’ve also been known to hop in the car and drive to the beach to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Hope sleep comes to you soon! -dave
Jules says
Surf the Web just like you…catch up on the Whatever blogs.
Jessica says
Think of a time when you were so tired, you would do anything to get in bed and go to sleep. Put yourself in that place.
Christian says
Um, when I can’t sleep.. I lay in bed and check the clock every ten seconds and get more annoyed that I’m still not asleep…especially after an hour has gone by, and another, and another….
But, luckily it’s rare for me.
So, I sent you an e-mail about Derek and Romaine and you totally responded in like 10 seconds and it was awesome.
I love listening to your show because I just sit at a desk typing stuff all day and it definitely makes the time fly by…
It’s kinda funny though because when I come home from work, I talk about your day to my boyfriend like I you were a co-worker or something…
Anyway,
have a glass of warm milk and cookie…
not a special one…
Maureen says
Can’t sleep either. That’s why I’m up reading your blog. I need to give up caffeine!
Monica says
I can’t sleep because Hank and I just bought a house earlier this evening and it was quite nerve wracking so while he is in bed curled into a fetal position and moaning from the shock I am reading blogs and looking for a refrigerator.

Hi Jenny – like you I’m not a drinker but when I have a touch of insomnia a shot of Amaretto DeSarono works wonders for me – puts me out like a baby – I guess I have a low tolerance for alcohol.
The big “O” and I don’t mean Oprah also knocks me out. OK maybe too much information there

Ok, so when you were talking about the “special cookies” yesterday I couldn’t believe it. I have had the same the repetative “am i dying?” “what if I just stop breathing?” thoughts and I know how horrible it is. Rationally you know that it is in your mind, but the fear creeps in that what if this time is it not, and you really ARE dying. I really thought I was alone in those thoughts. I never share them with anyone thinking they would have no idea what I was going thru. Thank you for being so brave to be able to share that.
Now I know you asked about sleep, but I just had to thank you for your honesty and being so candid.
Sammi says
I usually pop in a DVD or whatever is on TV and watch til I fall asleep.
FYI: regarding the gluten thing mentioned yesterday, it is actually a very common allergy, but unfortunately people don’t know they have it a lot of the time and find out too late when they have bad digestion problems. http://www.celiac.com if you want more info. 🙂
Hope you can get some sleep soon! I hate when that happens.

I’ve been known to sand my patio deck or paint my Adirondack chairs. However, a long rave with a good dvd collection (like CSI) doesn’t hurt either… Sweet dreams!
Pam says
A nice warm bubble bath with no lights on, just a few candles lit. Take a nice cup of hot decaf tea…my fav. is honey almond. After a realxing bath and cup of tea…a nice rub of body lotion, then crawl into a nice comfy bed.

My favourite subject!! sleeping is a waste of time or that’s what i tell myself… I write, paint, send e-mails or go for a walk in the city. You meet the most interesting people at night:-)

when you can’t sleep do some situps, you need it.

I can’t sleep either. It’s been a week or so. Maybe smoke some weed? An Excedrin PM or something stronger if you’ve got it?
grandmajo to jennifer says
when I was on the food plan from Kay Shepherd’s book on Food Addiction, I had a cup of milk and a small piece of fruit, as a metabolic, an hour before retiring at night. it gave me something to look forward to after dinner, relieved constipation, and had the bonus effect of making me sleeeeepy.

I read Whatever Show recaps from long ago. The downside is, I’m laughing so hard, I can’t get back to sleep…
P.S. get that car back to the BMW dealership ASAP and make sure they give you a loaner until they get it fixed.
Bri says
If I can;t sleep, I stay off the internet and I DON’T watch TV. It’s overstimulating.. I would be up all night. I make some chamomile tea and read a book. I might break our a heating pad too and put it on my tummy; it comforts and relaxes me.
Anyways, thanks for being you. You and the show are a bright spot in my day!
grandmajo to pam vanstone says
unless you suspect the kid is a psyco future serial killer, let it go.

I do think it’s best to get up-if after 20 minutes or so you can’t get back to sleep. I do a great Rodney Yee Power Yoga tape. It helps me relax so I can eventually get back to sleep. I also struggle with anxiety.
Good luck. Sleeping wishes!
Paulie says
Someone beat me to it but I am totally suggesting some more “Special” cookies for that good night sleep.

Try to stop thinking… sounds crazy, but try to feel the moment and try to not think of anything. it will help

As badly as you spell?

Meisen, you are hilarious! I love your comments!

Hi Jen,
I had to write – I’m a transplant New Yorker living in Florida and I love you guys! When I listen to you it’s like being home again. I can totally relate to the stuff you talk about and laugh my head off. It makes my 40 minute drive home go so fast. Anyway, just wanted to say that I understand about the whole “anxiety” thing. I’ve been going through exactly the same thing as you my whole life. When
philly dave to RN Jeff says
Do you perform said masturbation via a webcam?

I forgot to mention this… Anxiety has been kicking my ass these past few weeks and my shrink gave my some good advice: “Don’t let TOMORROW ruin TODAY. Live in the ‘now’, until it all goes away.” Peace be with you, Jenny.

Sleep? When I can’t I get behind the wheel and start driving my rig. Now that its summer I hope to find some unsuspecting ‘vacationing’ family driving real late. Their SUV overloaded with all kinds of sh*t strapped down on top. Lossing some it on the road as they burn gasoline @ $3/gal so Timmy can see the Grand Canyon. I pass’m then give the *ssh*l*, driving the family that late, a whip of my trailer in their face. LOL=imaging their face. Well @ least they’ll be bright eyed for the next 100mi. BTW 4 wheelers: Happy Motoring…
Meisen says
To the Real Karenska: thank you. I am working on being funny in person, too.
WI Girl says
Lately I’ve only been getting a few hours a night. My husband travels for work and I wake up with all sorts of crazy fears….In the morning I realize how stupid it is but at night????
shannon says
You really should try masturbation. Ya I know not such a pretty word. If that doesn’t get you 1 1/2 Ambien works as well.
RN Jeff to Meisen and philly dave says
1) no webcam, only in person. 2) my spelling is getting worse with age, you should know ’bout that Meisen.
Kelly says
Read, watch movies, clean, whatever-I was born with insomnia and haven’t slept more than 3 or 4 hours a night for 38 years. It sucks!!
Bridgette says
I drink Night Time Melatonin tea. I swear it works. In the summer I make iced tea with it and drink it about a 1/2 hour before bedtime during the week when I must go to bed early. I order it from Puritans Pride. The website is puritan.com if you’ve not heard of it. They have great deals!
I love you and the show!
Stephanie R says
I would smoke weed before taking Ambiant any day
!PS it does work well!
Meisen to RN Jeff says
Hey, you are right! I just turned 22 and my spelling has turned to shit. I had to ask my 16 year old sister to spell-check this for me. Phew!
Leanna says
i am the queen of insomniacs and have been to every sleep doc/clinic to no avail…i have depression/anxiety and believe that is the cause plus ADHD so my mind is on five million things…try not to worry about not sleeping as that causes conditioned insomnia (you believe you won’t sleep)–am now trying white noise, craniosacral therapy and meditation and am sleeping better but no computer nor tv before sleeping–too stimulating! i find when kids are back in school/college & in a routine the sleep gets better too. good luck, love ya both!
Bella says
I take Melatonin. It works great and always gets me relaxed just perfectly.
I have friends that take two however one seems to work well for me.
kimberly says
When I can’t sleep….I turn the lamp on, and read…..or, warm up some skim milk to sip, with a little cinnemon in it while you read. Works for me.
Liz from Kittery says
Take a pill
Bearz says
I’ve been a night owl forever. As a kid I’d sneak into the livingroom after hours, just to watch Joe Franklin, Tom Snyder, & Monty Python’s Flying Circus– way back in the 70’s. I choose to work mostly at night, it’s a great time to paint, or develop photos. Sometimes I’ll brake out the bagpipes, or play piano until I feel like painting, or heading back into my darkroom. Occasionally I’ll even make bagels, or cookies long about 3am. (From scratch) Next time you’re bored in the wee early hours do something you really enjoy. Perhaps watch a favorite film, put on some music and start that book you’ve been meaning to read for pure pleasure. If other things are stressing you, make a list & decide which things you can address immediately.
Deanna S says
I’ve talked to Ariel about this. We always wake up at 3:30am. I get scared because of the Exorcism of Emily Rose and in the movie it says after 3am is the worst time of night. I can’t think about it or I get freaked out. I read good things like cooking and decorating mags or self improvement, investing, career books or I get up and search/shop online for random stuff, read the Whatever Board, respond, email people, things like that. I usually eventually get tired and fall asleep. Sometimes I fall asleep at my desk and wake up and I hear the birds and it’s light outside. Too bad I can’t sleep that well in the bed where I’m supposed to! .
Mellanie H says
Hi Jennifer,
I seldom sleep well so I organize and clean. Also, the insominia has me very attached to TiVo! I hope you are able to get some rest – not being able to sleep is absolutely horrible.
