Thanks for letting us know about Dreamgirls. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Jennifer. I did think it was heavily hyped, so I’m happy to hear that it’s not just all talk. Dreamgirls is on my list to see with my daughter, who is home from UVM on winter break.
I am also looking forward to the opening of “Perfume – The Story of a Murderer”. I saw a screening of it earlier this month at Dolby 88, and I can’t wait to take my husband and my book club (I had them all read it this fall when it was my turn to chose) to see this film. It’s so beautifully done, you can just about smell the scents of Paris in the mid-1700’s when you see it. (The good AND the bad~!)
Hope you’re enjoying sunny, warm FL!

Tried to see the first showing of Dreamgirls today but it was PACKED. Will try to see it tomorrow. I didn’t want to see the show with a bunch of hacking, sneezing, cold and flu-ridden crowds. LOL. I was wondering if people clapped at the end. I heard there was a showing in NYC where the audience stood up after Hudson sang her signature number. So exciting!

Karenska, I too scored some passes for next week’s screening of “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”, and based on your movie review, I can’t wait to see it! “Blood Diamond” was also good…

Good recommendation. It’s on my list. I watched Charlotte’s Web with my daughter (age 5) this weekend. We’d read the book so she was ready for the sadness. It didn’t stop any of us from shedding tears–afterwards she said she didn’t cry out loud because she didn’t want to be rude to the other people in the theater. Kids. Well done adaptation of the book–Charlotte’s web-spinning scenes were awesome.

Bipolar – Hi – hope you are feeling better! Let me know how you like the film. Paramount actually contacted us via our website (Sniffapalooza) and offered our group of fragrance lovers the screening, followed by a luncheon with “Les Christophs” – the perfumers who created the coffret of scents that accompany the movie. It was an amazing day!

just got home from seeing dream girls and it was not as great as everyone is saying. There isn’t one song in the whole movie that I would want to listen to again. I do agree that Jennifer Hudson has an amazing voice.
I can’t figure out what all the hype is about.

I’m an old guy who was around in the 50’s and 60’s when they were cranking out those stock rock ‘n roll biz movies. I’ve seen this movie a dozen times before. Dreamgirls has the clichéd characters and the predictable paper thin plot that were characteristic of the genre. Even in the context of that genre Dreamgirls doesn’t make the grade because it has an instantly forgettable soundtrack.
I think Dreamgirls was supposed to be a parody of those old movies, but none of the critics got it because they are all too young to have seen them. They are not classics. Dreamgirls takes itself very seriously with not one moment of humor. Therein lies the parody — nobody took those old rock n roll movies seriously.
As those old rock ‘n roll movies demonstrated, transferring great stage numbers straight to film with twinkie filling between the numbers does not make a great movie.
My nomination for the most over-hyped movie of 2006 goes to …
