hi everyone!
as you heard on the broadcast tonight, i went to dinner monday night at a restaurant called rao’s…it’s almost impossible to get a reservation so we were lucky to be able to go.
well i arrived at dinner and had (as my sister refers to it) "the grippers"…you know that belly ache that makes you want to scream?! (i’m convinced the almonds and apricots i ate for lunch disagreed with my stomach!)
alexis said i just needed to poop….the thing is i CANNOT poop anywhere but home. (or my sister’s house or a close friends house!)
tmi?
i’m sure i’m not alone- plenty of you have called in to the show saying you suffer from the same thing… right?!
well here is how i looked sitting at the dinner table across from keith (at rao’s).
and my sister stacy (who did not have "the grippers").
and the pasta i couldn’t eat.
oh and for people with small children….
do you make your own birthday cake to celebrate with your kids??? i have to have a cake with my kids thursday- but keith CANNOT bake!
xoxo

Hey Jennifer…Bake a cake for yourself! I’ve done it many times. I pour over all of my cookbooks and pick a cake I haven’t had yet and that I’d love to try and then I bake it and we have people over and everyone eats it together. We spend so much time baking things for people that they like so why no do the same for ourselves? This year I made a coconut cake with a coconut frosting….delish!

Jennifer – So sorry that you could not enjoy Rao’s! I have always heard it is excellent but have never been able to get a reservation. For those of us who cannot get into Rao’s, have you tried their jarred pasta sauces? If so, how do they compare to the real thing at the restaurant? I have tried the vodka sauce and think it is very good but am curious to know if it tastes similar what they serve in the restaurant.
jenny hutt says
hi rudy!
i’ve been to rao’s before- and been able to eat.
everything tastes better there but i too use their jarred sauces at home. i use the marinara and the arrabiata. and sometimes the vodka but almost never.
arrabiata is the BEST!

Hi Jen. Listen, in the baking book by Martha, there are some great cakes in there. Pick out your favorite, forget any diet crap, make it, eat it and enjoy life! I make my own every year because then I have it the next day (and on and on) if my husband doesn’t wolf it down that is!

I have been tempted to call when the poop issue has come up. I, as well, can usually only do that sort of business at home. It’s only when I travel that this becomes an uncomfortable issue. Missing my daily ritual would not encumber me enough to have to exit a dinner engagement. It is not that I choose to only poop at home; it is that I can’t poop elsewhere. As of yet, I have no sympathy with people that miss one poop and proclaim misery. You have to get seriously backed up for me to comiserate. BTW, loved hearing from Bunny on Monday. I have missed her.

On my birthday my husband BUYS my cake from a local bakery, the same place where our wedding cake was made. Red Velvet is my favorite. The cakes are very good and they also sell homemade pies. Or you could always go for a NY cheese cake, YUM!
Dana in Philly says
We LOVE Rao’s jarred sauces. I even buy them for my inlaws. I know what you mean about the pooping issue. I can’t poop anywhere but home. Men (much like dogs) can poop ANYWHERE! In fact, I think my husband enjoys pooping in a new place.
As for the birthday cake…there are so many great bakeries in NY, why not let Keith surprise you with a cake. Take a break from the kitchen…you worked your butt off on Sunday!
Ariel says
I will check out the Rao’s sauce! I’m kind of addicted to the Gia Russa Vodka sauce, but I’m always looking for something new! Jennifer, I can’t poop any where either, and if we have guests in our house for the weekend, forget it, I’m in pain! Have you tried drinking those yogurts with probiotics in them? I ask because they just kind of make you more “normal” and if you could simply sit and shit (sorry!) you’d probably be able to do it outside of the house. Good luck!
alexis says
who cares if you have a husband who doesnt bake when I do and am going to? jesus h!

it’s rao’s for godsake!!! you should have went to the nearest bk and pooped over there (i also can’t poo in public. had a nasty bout of gastroenteritis, with the ka ka poo’s, way back when i worked in a fancy gallery off fifth avenue. lasted for what seemed like forever. ran to trump towers where they had a gazallion toilets. how pathetic is that (and you should always carry anti poo meds if you are like that)). buy his cookbook, you can relive the memories at home.
Tanya says
I’m with you on the poop issue. I cannot poop in “public” restrooms like stores, airports, at work, etc. I do remember the one time I had to go reallllly bad at an airport and I was able to go. My 3 year old seems to have the same issue. He never poops at school.
Dana says
You might be surprised–I thought my hubby couldn’t bake, either, then one year on my birthday I came home to find that he and my kids had made me a chocolate cake and even “decorated” it.The cake came from a box, of course, and even the most incompetent cook can bake a cake from a mix! So tell Keithy to get in there and get to it!
Jane M says
What’s the big deal…bake the cake yourself WITH your kids! That’s what I always do! Let them frost it (after you make the frosting). It’s not big deal — birthdays really aren’t a big deal here anyway. I bought the RAO’S cookbook (used of course on Amazon). Try some of the recipes…they really work! Although I would like to go for dinner 1 day there — looks like fun with the singing and mobsters and celebs etc. Any sightings last night?

Your sister’s hot.

Jen – It is your birthday and you should do whatever will make you happiest! Buy a cake from a bakery you love – or make one with the kids. Whatever is the easiest and will be the best for you. My husband is an excellent cook – but he does not really bake. However, he can read – so I emailed him a Martha Stewart Devil’s food cake recipe (from the halloween show) and asked him to make that cake for my birthday. He did – and it was very good! So- Keithy may just be able to surprise you with his talent if you give him the opportunity!
Jill says
I make my own cake. This year I made a dacquoise with coffee buttercream from a recipe on alexis’s blog last year (Dec, I think). It turned out really well. If I relied on my family to be responsible for my cake then I’d end up with a carvel ice cream cake (gross!)
Emmy says
Jennifer, do you have a Sprinkles cupcake store? That would be fun instead of a cake. They sell the Sprinkles mix now at Williams-Sonoma or you could just buy a party pack of them.
In Dallas there’s frequently a very long line but they are yummy.
watch out for the yogurts says
don’t try the yogurts…i thought i was already ‘normal’ but heard people rave about them…they made me like clockwork, but problem was it was always 3pm…at work…i was miserable!
Lisa says
My hubby and kids always make me one from a box… it is unbelievably nasty from a decorating point of view AND I LOVE IT! I am one of those dorks that if they do it with love I think it tastes better than anything else. Very common.. the pooping thing. My hubby can’t poop ANYWHERE but the toilet in our master bedroom. Traveling is a nightmare obviously. I’m the opposite.. can do it anywhere in < 5 seconds and he hates me for it.

i think this show really needs work lately, i love listening, but for the last month or two here, the topics besides anysoldier.com are really dull.
i don’t know..

Hi Jennifer! I also have the same poop problem! Also, when I eat dried fruit and nuts I ALWAYS get stomach pains/cramps…probably because I eat too much at one time (soooo good!) Ginger tea works amazing for any stomach ailment. I have it on me all the time and it really has changed my life (I always feel bloated). Try it… it really works!
Mary says
F nvr!…Totally clueless!
SUE/INDIANA says
Has anyone out there ever had a “bashful bladder”? you know when you are somewhere where there is a line of women to pee…and then you get in the stall to hover over the stool…and can’t go because you know people are waiting….my bladder freezes up and won’t go. forget pooping….no way. 🙁
Mary from the UK says
This topic reminds me of some “Sex and the City” episode…..
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with baking a fab cake for yourself to celebrate with the hubby and kids. All the better if they help you make it! But I have no doubt that some form of baked item will appear on the day. Hope it’s a memorable one!
Happy Birthday.
Oh, and when you gotta go, you gotta go…..
John says
Alexis is baking her a cake! She started it last month!
Enphal says
Happy Birthday (in advance)!! I hope you’re feeling better now. Your stomachache reminds me of an Oprah episode, in which Dr. Oz said that people sometimes go on vacation and never go to the bathroom until they go back home because they feel safest on their own toilet. The last part matches I guess…?
I hope to talk to you on AIM, I’m the one with “Donne” as in the English poet. I live in Kuwait (Kuwaiti) and I was wondering if I can call in one day to talk about… Whatever? 😛
Forward and upward!

Happy B.d. Jen – My B.d. is on Feb. 9th – I always have a b.d cake to celebrate with my kids, Becca is 11 and David is 4….they love it. This year I’m getting a Carvel Ice Cream cake, love that!!! My hubby usually gets the cake, so tell Keith to go out and BUY a cake, or show him how to make a BOX CAKE so easy – just don’t tell Alexis!!!!HA Happy Birthday! Liz
Dana in Philly says
Sue/Indiana…I have the same problem. Whenever I have to produce a urine specimen I freeze up. I left a lab once and had to come back to produce it later. What a pain!
Carvel ROX says
Why doesn’t he just get a fudgie the whale cake? If you still can’t take a dump, you will at least throw up.
Shayla says
Yes, Jennifer, I too suffer from CPABH (Can’t Poop Anywhere But Home). It can be very inconvenient!
Of course you can bake your own b’day cake. Have the kids decorate it for you!
Laura C says
I have the same bathroom issue. It’s called STS in our family. (strange toilet syndrome). I’ve overcome it with age (for the most part) Can’t Keith have Alexis make a cake, or, aren’t there lots of great bakeries in the city where he can buy a good cake???? Have a Happy Birthday today, make sure to splurge on the baked goodies. Please no boxed cake mix!
Ali says
Oh, it was so the apricots….
Susan says
Get over yourself. Thank God or someone or something that you have what you have.
