glad your back in the studio. Getting back to a somewhat normal routine will probably do you good, and your mother will feel good knowing your doing things you love. Forget the WW for now…you are setting yourself up for failure. Just try to make good choices and remember…everything in moderation.

Jennifer, I was a WW leader for many years (I lost 85 lbs) and I refer to the core plan as advanced WW. I really like it but only if I already have my portions under control. I liked it because I didn’t have to count and could still eat in restaurants without having to figure out what to write down. I felt the same way – out of control if I wasn’t already in check with my portions. Remember to use your hand as a guideline, it definitely helps! You can also switch week to week between core and flex….I did that for when I was feeling in control I did core but when I was stressed and needed the structure I did flex. Hope that helps! Good Luck – I know you can do it! I used to tell my members, remember PROGRESS, not perfection! 🙂

Love, Love, Love the WW Plan. The core plan is perfect if you are wanting to jump start your weight loss. I too, am trying to get back on the weight loss band wagon. It is so hard and I want to be skinny (healthier) SOOOOO bad I can taste it so I will do it along with you and hopefully by we will both be skinny bitches before the end of summer (We redheads have to stick together.) Hope you mom is feeling better today and you are doing better. I am keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. BTW, love Jennifer Weiner’s books. She is sooo funny and real.

Personally I did Jenny Craig, however I have a lot of friends who’ve had great success with WW. They say that they played with both programs in order to keep their taste buds interested. I remember them telling me that the point system helped with variety and the core helped them with keeping up with the diet when times got rough. Anyway, they recommended to start with the points and then if you want switch to the core and then back if you want.
Good luck!
PS- One of the girls posted quite a few recipes in a private forum that I belong to. I can email them if you would like, though a lot of them are in metric since she’s in Devon, England.

Hi Jennifer,
I’ve been on WW Core for 2 weeks now. I have mixed reviews. In its defense, one of those weeks I was on vacation. You can eat more, but I’m getting sick of fruits and veggies for snacks – and I’m pretty much a vegetarian!! I may go back to flex. I just don’t know yet. I want to give Core a chance. Stress and core didn’t really work too well for me.
Good luck and best wishes!

Oh Good how I really love to be so skinny as alexis is… she´s not that skinny far from being anorectic she´s very elegant.
And you are fun and beautifull, and most of the people aren´t (sorry the missplelling).
Regards from Portugal, always read you blogs…

Jennifer, I tried and loved the core plan. If you like to cook, this is a great plan because you can make your own food and don’t have to count all those points. You do get a points allowance every week, but it’s hard to use all of them. I lost around 40 pounds. Go for it- by the way…sorry about your mom- I love hearing her on your show! take care!

the main thing to know is that the more protein you eat, the better you feel!!!

good luck with whatever plan you settle on. whatever it is see if its compatible with Kay Shepherd’s food addiction book. If it is you’ll lose weight and begin to get a handle on your racing/generalized anxiety. As soon as you can’t comfort yourself with more food than you need, your anxiety will go up. So, you need to address emotional and spiritual issues at the same time.

Have done flex in the past…doing core now…great way to jump start…those flex points are nice…
http://www.hungrygirl.com is great for Flex…they have adapted recipes and give great tips on new products…new favorite…Honey Maid delights…cookie / cheesecake (available in chocolate) low points…great way to use the flex points on the core plan.

Hi Jennifer.
I tried core and hated it.
I love my chocolate and flex let me have it and fit it in..
I have since switched to spark people, cause its free and I enjoy the features on their website.

I too struggle with my eating in emotional times and it is so disheartening…
wish you the best of luck

Hi Jennifer,
I’m sorry you’re going through such a stressful time with your mother. And I’m sending you and your family all my best and good thoughts.
As far as WW is concerned, I agree with the previous poster who referred to Core as “advanced WW”. I’ve done WW now a few times and I always find that the Flex plan works best for me. Getting portions under control, going back to weighing, measuring, counting, AND journalling is what helps me to lose, and most importantly, maintain my weight loss.
I also agree with another poster who said not to worry about the WW right now. Concentrate on making the best choices you can. And if you’ve found in the past that exercise is a good stress reliever for you, perhaps doing some physical activity would help.

Am an overweight by many pounds Life Time WW member…always go back to the FLEX. Just the way my life is – need to be able to eat from all the food groups and serve my family at the same time. My college age daughter is on her 3rd week (tomorrow) on flex and she’s having great success. Good luck and I hope things ease for you soon. You’re in my thoughts.
Carol from Ohio says
Jennifer–I agree with Dana from Philly about waiting a bit before committing to a new program. But while you’re considering what programs to try, take a new look at Jenny Craig. The food is really very good and there’s a variety to keep you interested. No points to keep track of, but you note what you eat and when you exercise. You can handle everything online but I think consulting one on one in person is more effective. Good luck!
Nicole says
I think Flex works better for me anyway, I know I eat too much (portion wise) on core. I don’t know how you feel about yoga, but it is great for de-stressing, weight loss and helping you feel like you are in control and it’s a great motivator!

signed up for core last week but thought my kid had a tumor so didn’t really follow it. did jenny once. made me feel like a fat f ck for eating an apple (this was years ago). did lose what i wanted to but you have to buy their crap. i am tooo tired to count points. this seems brainless. why don’t you do one of those weight loss watch and follow me thingies on your blog. you can be like oprah or something. it’ll keep your mind off other stuff. (go jenny go — sorry, couldn’t resist). oh, i hate dr. phil but he wrote a book a long time ago about weight loss. his first diet one. it’s actually really good. just common sense but sometimes you need to be reminded (and i really hate that prick but i liked the book way back when so don’t buy it and give him money, rent it from the library)

Thank you, Jennifer for taking up for Alexis. I have a similar body type, though I am not anywhere close to being in such great physical condition, and I appreciate it when people realize that some people are simply tall and thin.
Courtney says
I’m going into my 2nd week on WW and chose to do Core to kick start the weight loss (I’ve done WW before)- I want to get anorexic skinny but it’d never happen. I like Core because I can eat avocado’s – they’re too many points if doing flex. I struggle with finding protein sources though that won’t cost me points – I’m not a vegetarian but not a meat eater either. I love it right now because of all the fresh summer fruits and veggies. I still do write everything down right now because otherwise I wouldn’t hold myself accountable for the extra 35 points.
Whatever you choose to do I wish you luck – you’ll feel so much better about yourself just by taking care of your body, mind and soul.

Soooo glad you’re getting back in the studio!!! Hope your mom’s doing well….I’ve been praying for her. Have you tried eating low carb? Its the only thing that has ever really worked for me. I lost 60 pounds years ago on it….got down to a size 6 from a size 12. Once you get through the first couple of weeks, iits so easy to stick to too!! I know that YOU feel that you need to lose weight, but you are so beautiful! I think you’re crazy!!! Good luck!!!
Erin from Pittsburgh says
I only wish I were as thin as Alexis. I can’t imagine. Good to hear you back in the studio, Jennifer. I don’t expect you to be there. Only glad that you are. I called in today to say that I felt lucky to have seen Alexis’ boobs image on the blog before it was removed because I just got my laptop and had only accessed the blogs for the first time yesterday. I will now be checking this out daily because I love to hear what you have to say. Jennifer, I know that I don’t know you personally, but I love who you are as I know you from the radio. You are a special person.

Have you tried the Alli pill? I have been on it for 3 months and have lost 25 pounds. You do have to watch your fat intake but I am never hungry. and i am normally a very hungry girl. The pill scares you into not eating a lot of fat because you are worried of the treatment effects. It doesnt affect your head or your heart like other pills. You should def. give it a try!
S says
Honestly Jen, now is not the time for you to do weight watchers. Seriously, why stress yourself out more? I struggle with my weight and I have found the best thing to do is not diet. Ellie Kreiger has a great idea (she is on The Today Show/Food Network) she has foods that are Usually/Sometimes & Rarely. I lost over 40 pounds not depriving or dieting, but by treating my body like a temple. You should check her out. Don’t worry about weight right now. Take care of youself and make the best choices you can. Love you, love your show!
Jennie says
I’m not a big fan of “dieting”, but I am a fan of being healthy and moderation. I just need help with the moderation at times. OK, a lot of time. I had a co-worker on the core program a while back and she raved about it. It really has you boost your fresh fruit and veggie intake.
I joined diet.com. My problem is that I can’t do anything without motivation. There are all different kinds of people on there, mostly women, but of all different shapes and sizes. There are groups, blogs and challenges. It keeps it interesting. I believe it is free, which is amazing. If you become a “premium member” the fee is relatively minimal. There are also other groups out there too.
Good luck with it! It sure isn’t easy, but it is worth it!

I became anorexic when my father had cancer. Food was the only thing I could control as everything else was spiraling out of control. I would say eat as healthy as you can while you are so stressed out and not worry whether you or following a plan.

Hi Jennifer –
I never tried the core plan, only because I knew if left to my own devices I would have overeaten. The points worked for me because it was more rigid – which is what I needed. I pretty much ate core food anyway since I am not much of a snacker – I prefer hearty meals. I am not sure what kind of eater you are, I think you might be more of a grazer?? Anyways, my 88 year old grandmother always says to eat half of what’s on your plate and keep the other half as leftovers (or give to the dog!). Also my mom says put down your fork and knife in between every bite (impossible!)…this gives your tummy more time to tell your brain that it full and you are less likely to overeat. Common suggestions probably, but thought I would share anyways. Thinking about you and yours and I wish you all the best.

WW sucks. I gained 10 lbs! Try the Low Glycemic diet – I’ve lost 35 lbs. since April 1st!

I have done WW for the past 6 months and am down 25 lbs. I have modified the flex plan a bit to fit into my life. I had decided when I started if I had to change my life completely….I knew I wouldnt stick to it. So I still go out for supper, make the food I love, and eat what I am hungery for. I just make better choices along the way. Hang in there! You can do it!

Hi Jennifer!
I went on Weight Watchers in March and was told that the Core plan is more for people that make their own food, most of the time. It’s very “recipe” oriented. I stayed on the points plan due to it’s simplicity.
I also go on a free website that is called Spark People. http://www.sparkpeople.com It’s GREAT for providing food plans, recipes, and the best…a community forum, plus articles on all sorts of health related things..including emotional eating. There is one article that talks about solving our problems with food. Not a good idea! But it delves into solving problems with other things. I use it every single day (the site)
I was hospitalized in Feb. with a dual bowel obstruction from hernias. I am morbidly obese. (what a moniker) My doctor came into my room, and said, “Just like a smoker who, at some point in their smoking habit, we have to tell we can’t help anymore…one day you will come in with a problem that we will not be able to fix because of your weight.” Well…that was enough for me! All I could think about was not seeing my grandchildren grow up..not doing art anymore. I cut out ALL the junk food in my life…no sweets, chocolate, ice cream, cookies. Less cheese (one of my problems)..and I have lost almost 70 pounds since early Feb! I feel sooo much better! I still have a far path to travel, but I will get there. Slow and Steady Wins the race. Also..since I’m spewing quotes..here’s one from Yoda (yep, Star Wars)…”Do, or Do Not…there is no “Try” I’m either on my plan, or off.
One more thing..there is a new magazine out there called Clean Eating. I just got it and it looks great. Check it out!
Take care…I listen to you daily…(((((((hugs))))))))) for you!

I’m on the WW Flex plan right now. It works very well for me. I make up a lot of different foods with low points. I use the e-tools on the website and recipe builder to figure out points. I always have plenty of room for some wine in the evening. I’ve lost 10.8 lbs since May 12. I like the flex plan because if I were to be on the core plan, I’d have to give up too many things that I like. If I can make my own food choices from the infinite list and not just the core list, then I know it’s easier for me to stay on program. I also do not call it a “diet”. There’s a sign on the window in front of the WW office that says “Diets are mean”. I find that if I think of this as more of a healthy lifestyle choice then it’s easier.
Mica says
You are totally on target to get back on ww. I have lost 19 lbs and continued it even though my dad was in the hospital. It kept me sane when there weren’t many things to keep sane about. I would pack my breakfast and eat with him in his room. If I didn’t pack lunch I would always find something I could eat in the cafe. It’s definitely a lifestyle choice and I think it will help during this stressful time.

So sorry about your mom, Jennifer. I can only imagine. In some way, I think going on WW flex again might be good for you. Like Mica said it may feel like one area you can control and help keep you sane and then work on ’emotional eating’ later. Take care! and just don’t get too fanatical about the points and stuff. Give yourself a break when necessary.
