Tracy says
Looks like a cicada, honey. They are the bugs that make that loud buzzing noise when it’s really hot outside.
Jillllll in Texas says
We call them locusts. Some people call them cicadas. When they die they’ll leave a nice, dried out exoskeleton stuck on a wall or tree for you. And they are deafening if they get in the house.

It looks like a Cicada. Not to worry — it won’t hurt you. They are common insects, most often heard from trees. (Some people think the sound is made by telephone wires vibrating, but it’s the male cicada.) It is thought that the male cicada makes the loudest sound in the insect world and there are over 75 species of cicadas in NA.

Cole says
It’s a locust, isn’t it?
Emmy says
I believe it’s a locust. Eventually it will leave a brown husk of a shell (as kids we use to pin the little husk on our clothing and wear the shell).

Lynne says
It looks like it might be a locust(sp).
theresa says
It looks like a cicada. Here in the midwest, every few years, they “emerge” from the ground to find a mate – making a cacaphonous symphony during that period – and then they die. Despite their large, “buggy” eyes, they supposedly don’t see very well, and are known to randomly fly into any object (including people) in their way. They are definitely challenged in the looks department, but actually quite harmless; meaning, they don’t bite or sting. Having grown up in NJ, I had heard of cicadas, but never actually saw one until I moved to the midwest. One of your kids might be brave enough (my four year old daughter is) to pick it up by its wings (like a dragonfly) and toss it into the air, where it will fly away in search of its mate.
SA says
That is a Cicada (Locust) they come out of the ground at the end of summer and make that awesome noise. Don’t worry, he will be dead soon and he won’t hurt you.

Roxy says
I think it’s a cicada. You know, those bugs that make that loud chirping sound. I always find dead ones under the pine tree in our back yard.
Canada Kathy says
Wow, I’m going to say some kind of mutant creature that crawled (or maybe flew) up from a swamp? Did you try to catch it?
Paula says
Hi Jennifer – I think this is a type of cicada – there are many different kinds – the males are the ones that make a very loud noise this time of year, trying to attract a mate!
Candyce from Texas says
Hi Jenny! What you have there is a garden variety LOCUST. Also called a Cicada. We have them all over Texas and it looks like one landed your way. They are harmless, but loud…
Mary says
Looks like a cicada to me but my insect identification skills are not the best.
Shannon says
Looks like a locus to me. I’ve seen them a few times this summer myself, weird!! Loved the pics and I cant wait for the premier of whatever martha..you guys rock, thanks for the fun!!!
Beverly says
It’s a Cidcada, some people may call it a locust and some people call them jar flys. They are very noisy. This summer our area (Southern Ohio) had millions of them. My dog had a feast, LOL.
Robin from Okla says
Locust i think.
Me says
I believe that is a cicada.
Sandy/Scottsdale says
I believe that is a Cicada. Completely HARMLESS. They make a loud noise and usually come out at the end of summer 🙂 they shed their “skin” and leave a crispy shell on trees and stuff = and we used to go around collecting them in a box – for absolutely no good reason. They are harmless no worries.
Robin in Memphis says
I believe it is a Cicada.
Sonja says
Looks like a locust. Does he buzz really loud?

It’s a highly poisonous Palin beetle. Pretty on the outside but deadly on the inside.
Elissa says
Could it be a giant cicada????
sally says
Lucky Jennifer, your new pet adorning your Martha Stewart Patio Furniture appears to be a lovely (ugh) Cicada! They appear about every 17 yrs, yet there are several types, I believe. Check out http://www.CacadaMania.com I think that’s your answer!! You can even fry them up for tonights appetizer!!! GAG!!
MM says
As children, my brothers and I had a lot of fun with our friends as we would grab them and run around chasing each other. When they made that really loud noise, it was all the better; yet scary holding it.
chris says
hell, i thought that was some type of luna moth. the cicadas we have here in staten island are ugly as shit and squat. that’s easy on the eyes (yes, si locusts are nasy)
Erica from Ohio says

Chrissy says
I’m an Entomologist…it’s a cicada.
Just FYI, locusts and cicadas are completely different insects. They aren’t even in the same order. Locusts are in the order Orthoptera and Cicadas are in the order Homoptera. Locusts are grasshoppers. 🙂
HBE says
Cicada-licious yep the University of maryland has a pdf file on how to prepare cicada for dinner. Oh yes a source protein and according to this publication we average consuming bug parts on a daily basis as mass produced foods contain bug parts well so does broccoli remember that grub you found OMG
Pam says
Could it be a cicada? Yeah, there were a lot of them here this summer in the midwest in July and very noisy at night. They lay eggs that somehow fall into the ground and then the cicada dies and then in like 16 years or something the new cicada will take its place. We need an entomologyst to inform us. I have seen them just cover trees when I was a child and they were so loud it was deafening. I agree with Lori and just turn Hazel loose on it.

Hi,I read your blog everyday and admire you so much. There is a woman in my town that is dying of Lukemeia. She has days weeks at most. She has a blog myraspinkblog. She writes about her life and her struggle from the day she was diagnosed until present. Could you please mention her blog on your show. She says she gets such strength from peoples comments. If you dont want to mention it on the show could you and that wild Alexis just go on and say hi. Simple request that will mean the world to her and her family.
Andrea says
Wouldn’t it be making the horrible Cicada sound I’ve grown to HATE here in the Midwest? My vote is with the Katydid:

WhateverMarthaIsDoomed says
Why have 45 people answered the same question with the same answer? You’d think after you posted the answer 10 times people would stop offering their answer. As for the cicada, its late in the season for one of those, and they are generally bad omens. This doesn’t bode well for your new TV show.
julieAZ says
They only come around every 7 years. They are gone from here now. Their buzz is deafening.
Lisa in Hawaii says
Well I cannot see it very well, but from the legs it looks like a praying mantis. Does it have a head that looks like an alien?
I thought cicadas came in swarms; did this one just get lost from the rest or are there lots more? Is it making noise? Not being from the mainland, I cannot say as I have only heard of cicadas but never seen one.
Fun fact:
Praying mantis females bite the heads off of the males after they mate. ONCE in their life they get laid and what thanks do they get for the deposit and for propagating the species?
Gives whole new meaning to the expression “a little head never hurt anybody”!!!
to WhateverMarthaIsDoomed...... says
That’s because msgs don’t post immediately. Nice of you to stay positive about their new show.

its an effing monster-bug.
ds says
All that’s important is that you got your plug in for Martha. Gets old.
Erin from Pittsburgh says
I see plenty of others have already told you that it’s a cicada. Isn’t it wonderful? I love bugs! Not fond of spiders but most other bugs don’t frighten me. My niece and I look for them all of time and we have (ahem) little collections of dead ones that are all in one piece and still look nice. I currently have a large moth, a katydid and 3 butterflies in little containers. Well, the butterflies are pinned to a bulletin board. She’s 7 and we are competitive about who finds what and who keeps what. Are your kids interested in it? Did they see it? I didn’t read many of the other comments yet but saw that a few think the cicada’s “voices” are bothersome. But I LOVE the sound of the bugs in summer. It’s summer music. I love it that you put it on your blog! I think you’re great, Jennifer!
dangerkitty says
Nasty! It reminds me of the time I found a massive praying mantis on a plant pot on my balcony. Gross!
Erin from Pittsburgh says
Hey, WhateverMarthIsDoomed…
Some of us look at the blog and write a comment immediately because that’s our immediate, personal response! I for one don’t always want to wait until I read everyone else’s response. Sometimes I don’t even read the comments. It’s Jennifer I’m mostly writing to. If I have time, then I might go back and read the other comments. So bugger off!
bernadette says
Interesting-I have heard them all of my life but have never seen one. I find their buzz to be a good memory of summer!
Kay Kay says
My son loves to touch them so they make that loud noise. Harmless, but fun to play with.
sheila says
It’s a cicada and will come back in about 17 years. So you can enjoy taking this picture again when you are 54. Think about that, interesting. Good Luck with the new show.
Doug to Entomologist Chrissy says
Is it true that they are high in protein and that people in Africa eat them?
I KNOW I KNOW... says
I think it is a Cicada!!!! AHHAHAAH!!! Just kidding I just wanted to say it too!
Entomologist Chrissy says
They are high in protein and don’t taste that bad (if you can get over the texture). They are eaten by people around the world.
OBAMA/BIDEN aka leo to Doug says
People in Africa do eat bugs, but people in Mexico, South America, Australia, and Asia also routinely eat bugs. Don’t worry if the Republicans get back in we’re probably all be eating bugs.
Lisa in Hawaii says
OK I enlarged the pic and no it looks nothing like a praying mantis and now I know what a cicada looks like. And I think the “DOOMED” person is just rude, as well as whoever said something about the “Martha plug”.
I think all bugs are cool, minus cockroaches and centipedes, of course. What purpose could there possibly be for such vile creatures anyway?
Praying mantises are my favorites but I would NOT stick pins in them and hang them on my wall!
HBE says
If one finds the page about the cicada in Australia ( The summer of singing cicadas) you will learn these bugs have names!! Jennifer I think you have a Green Grocer theer in your yard. I have not located a picture of Black Prince, Double Drummer Cherrynose, Floury baker Red eye or Yellow Monday— they are edible harmless to humans, as they do not bite. Incidentally children came up with these names for these insects Green Grocer goes back to 1896 yes 1896. The info on the 17 years well it is the nymph that lives underground for 17 years before emerging to transform into the bug we have all now grown to love
Rose says
Is it still on top of the chair??
Melanie says
You looked awesome at the party! I always love your makeup. Maybe you or the makeup artist could share the technique??? Hope things are going to get easier for you soon.
Aphelele Mpumlwana says
Some insects are considered a delicacy in parts of Africe, much the same as escargots, and caviar are here.
LC says
It’s a beautiful cicada and it’s the sound of summer in Australia. The sound of thousands of the them on a hot summers night is the memory of Christmas. We used to collect the shells as kids.
Big Pete says
It’s a fuckin bug…
Tricia says
LOL My sister was maybe 5 yrs old when one landed on her arm. She gave out a horror movie scream and physically shook violently. I thought it was funny. :o)
Christy from CT says
Hi Jen,
Don’t feel bad for blogging when you’re sad. What you’re feeling is so normal and most of us have unfortunately experienced loss as well, so we get it. It’s good to let your feelings out, so blog away. Also, I promise that eventually, it will suck less.
Christy
Maryjane says
Oh my gosh, it’s one of those rare eyeball-sucking insects that has yet to be named and has recently been found in the U.S. I think they came over on a boat from South America and they’re very, very dangerous. Run, Jennifer, Run!!!!!
bonbon says
I refer to them as locusts, my dogs refer to them as appetizers – yuk! Also, watch out when you hang your laundry on the line in the summer, they may hitch-hike into the house on the sheets, like one did at our house when I was a kid, lol!
