i had a bout of nostalgia this weekend..and let’s face it, i have lots of bouts of nostalgia lately.
so i went to my attic to sift through stuff.
didn’t get very far.
but i found my hello kitty collection which i started when i was 12 years old. my mom had given me a bunch for my 12th birthday ( i think i was 12!). a lot of it is trash now (because i played with it and ruined its value!)
and here is the stuff in mint condition.
i also found beanie babies galore- with tags! (picture to come.)
but i think i need to go through pictures, letters and other containers little by little over the next few months- i had planned to clean my attic last summer but (as you know) i was otherwise occupied.

Now you have new prizes for the show!
Erica from Ohio says
WOW! I collect Hello Kitty and I am so jealous of your collection. I would have so much fun looking through that stuff.
Arlene says
Oh My Gosh!!! My sixteen year old daughter LOVES Hello Kitty. We just did her room in it. She would go nuts to see all this stuff. Introduce your daughter to Kitty.

I once had every single MAD magazine up until 1972 when I was sidetracked by other things in life. They too were up in the attic safely tucked away or so I thought. Some one of my dear family tossed them out, no one will claim responsibility, not that that would change anything. Nothing is worthless if it holds memories for you!

Enjoy going through your life. I love doing things like this. The only bad thing is instead of taking a couple of hours or a day, ends up taking much much longer. I get way to nostalgic, oh well, it’s fun going through remembering things and the stories that go with them.
h from bos says
my daughter, about your age, asked me to ask you if you want the hello kitty vacum cleaner she has. it actually works well. She has a lot of helllo kitty stuff that her brother paul brought back from japan when the bands visit there. Any way any interest.? let me know, you have my email. She has way too much and needs to clear some for her new baby due in 4.5 months.

So sweet! What a thoughtful mother you had! 🙂

Trash because the item was loved and played by a child????. I think not. This is a family heirloom. Honestly, an item touched and loved by an ancestor for future generations OMG It is not trash. Market value low Sentimental museum item very highly rated.

I recognize so much from my Hello Kitty collection (I did my freshman dorm in it – no one had it then, so it was cool. Er, cooler. Most of the girls had SMURFS . . . ) AH – The little compact – one side has a mirror, one a little comb. I wish I could find my Hello Kitty stuff now!
tivogirl says
If you get the courage to get rid of your stuff—just photograph it. Sometimes the memory of the item is more important than the item.
joann in chicago says
jen, hang onto all your Hello Kitty stuff. It’s priceless and always makes you smile! Same with the beanie babies. You can occupy your mind with organizing all this stuff. Container store has the coolest storage stuff and so does IKEA. Just a thought.
Pamie says
Jen, I love the truth. You are not tearing someone apart, just being truthful. You do not know how to select or keep a physician until you have been through what you have been through with Bunny. Your insight is going to help all of your readers when we go through our trials with sickness for ourselves and our families. I love you, God Bless.
Lynette in Michigan says
I love your messy attic! Love it! It would drive Alexis batty!
janelle says
Don’t ever thing that you ruined the value of something because you played with it. I hate collections! i believe products are made to play with and share. Wear the heck out of it! give it to some little girl who will love to brush her hair with a hello kitty brush. Forget monatary value! Turn it into some kitchy jewelry or keychain! that looks like a hello kitty mother-load!
Marcella says
I was going to say the same thing as Lynette – I bet Alexis would have a panic attack if she saw your attic. I’m sure she’d come organize it for you as she’s done for her other friends’ pantries.
Stephanie says
*GASP* That is an AWESOME Hello Kitty collection you have there…
Cori says
this is so funny, my mother just cleaned out her attic and I went thru the boxes and found all my old keepsakes, took a walk down memory lane, and felt really old. between my brother and I we have lots of nostalgia moments… we laughed about it all.
love you two your shows and this sight make me happy….
Ashley says
LOL my friend likes Hello Kitty also. She was saying how she thinks she is too old for it at 25!! WHAT I told her NO WAY! That would mean that I am way too old (28) for Blue’s Clues….And I am not!
Ken Jones says
WOW! That brings back memories! No, I did not collect L.K. or B.B., I was a bit more touched as a child. I collected underground comics and mad magazines. I had just about every U.C. and scored several very early Mads at a garage sale. Mom did not approve and vowed to destroy every one of them. Dad showed me a secret hiding spot to hide them but when I went off to college, professor mom found them, destroyed them and get this, kept the box in the same place and replaced the items with books!!! What books you ask? Chaucer, Keats, Poe, Hemingway, etc. Memories nonetheless! TFS = Thanks for sharing!
