You may not like Obama’s policies. You may think that McCain has plans that will benefit you. Even Obama would say that you have to carefully look at all of the facts about the candidates and make the decision that will benefit you. However, it is not correct to call Obama a moron. One of his many advantages is his intelligence, which is a fact, not an opinion, because it can be scientifically proven.

You’re crazier than hell. Look at what the replubican administration has done to this nation. Record deficit, Bush had a surplus when he went into office and turns around and maxes out the deficit clock, to 10 trillion dollars. I got TLO’d (temporarily laid off) last week, unemployment is through the roof. Not to mention his idiotic wars, and the record foreclosures, his lackluster response to Hurrican Katrina, $4.00 a gallon gas prices this summer. I think anyone who votes republican is a stupid jack-ass. I hope a bunch of dumbass rednecks don’t ruin for the rest of us. Bush has almost done away with the middle class. If mccain wants to do what is best for this country why did he put that dumbass, trouble making palin on the ticket.

Our Democratic legislative branch was unable to protect us from the effects of the current executive branch. Also, curious why so many associate the GOP with “rednecks”? (Is this use of “redneck” really politically correct code for racist?) A large percentage of the republican constituency are high income earners concerned about personal taxes, taxes that impact small biz, entitlements and gov. regulation of business’…hardly concerns of the stereotypical “redneck”.

I posted this to Alexis’ LOL blog already. However she hasn’t updated it so I will post again here. These are comments from today NY TImes David Brooks article about Big Government. Very interesting insight into the comments. Copied from NYTimes.com
Mr. Brooks,
I love your columns. I always read them and this is the first time I’m commenting. But over the past 30 years Republicans have increased the debt by significantly higher margins than Democrats, Clinton or Carter. Bush is the most egregious offender–increasing the debt by 4.5 trillion at last count while in eight years it increased 1.5 trillion under Clinton. So the question is not who will increase the debt–but where the debt will be increased? Small government for Bush has meant outsourcing government jobs. Does this make the government smaller? Maybe–but it does NOT make government less expensive. Have you read the Wrecking Crew by Thomas Frank? I would love to hear your response to this book as it provides a cutting look at the way conservatives rule…and it does not live up to the budgetary fiscal policy that they always promise. You, as an intelligent person, must know this. Can it be a coincident that the Democrats spend more on the programs that benefit the midddle class while the Republicans, while promising to reign in “government” in reality slash EPA, FDA and other regulating agencies budgets…leading to poorer drinking water, air quality, food quality etc.
Republicans don’t spend less than Democrats, they spend more. But more importantly, they spend differently. I wish you would discuss this and or discuss Frank’s book and the way he characterizes the conservative philosophy put into practice.
Thank-you.

Let’s see, under Bush the DOW went from 12,000 to under 8,000 in under 4 years. Under Clinton it went from 3,000 to 12,000 in 4 years. Had Clinton been in office for 16 years I beleive the DOW now would be closer to 30,000 than to 7,000. We’ve had about a week and a half of “socialist” spending and the DOW is making all-time record gains. I think you have not a leg to stand on in your support of the GOP and their voodoo.

David,
I’m frankly thrilled to imagine a “European style economy.” Here’s my argument: My husband and I made $100,000 last year. Of that $25,000 went to taxes. (I am self-employed and pay the extra FICA.) $12,000!! went to health insurance (2 adults in our mid-50’s, no children – we pay our own insurance), another $3000 to medication and medical expenses (my husband is diabetic). So, after taxes and medical, we have $60,000.
Now we move on to college: I had two children in college last year – one at George Washington University at $52,000 PER YEAR. I have another at University of Wisconsin Madison at $21,000 per year. (Now even the government knows I can pay for all of that, so they heap loans onto my children.) But, I did contribute $12,000 to their education (while their father contributed another $12,000.) Okay, now we’re down to $48,000.
Now I have to save for my retirement. Well, there’s another $12,000. And I’m left with $36,000 to pay the rent (we don’t own a home – sold our 4 years ago when we realized we couldn’t afford it!!!! Imagine!), eat, pay for the one car our family owns, clothe ourselves, pay for heating oil in Minnesota, and have a little fun.
Suddenly, IF the government wanted to take 50% of my income (as I understand happens in Europe) – and pay for all my health care, pay for college, and take care of me in retirement at a level equal to everyone else in my community, I would still have $50,000 a year to spend!!!! NOT the $36,000 I have here in America with the terror of a failing social security, rising health care, and my newly graduated son barely able to eat because of his high interest college loans!
European economics are looking good these days.

Christophers for Obama: Buckley and Hitchens
Mon Oct 13, 3:46 PM ET
The Nation — This is how bad it has gotten for John McCain.
Even the defenders of the Iraq War are deserting the Republican nominee who once thought he might “surge” into the Oval Office.
Yes, he has lost the Christophers.
In recent days, he has lost both Christopher Buckley and, now, Christopher Hitchens. Both have announced their plans to vote for man who opposed launching the Iraq War: Democrat Barack Obama.
First, Buckley, the apple-did-not-fall-from-the-tree son of William F., writes a column titled, “Sorry, Dad, I’m Voting for Obama,” in which he writes:
I have known John McCain personally since 1982. I wrote a well-received speech for him. Earlier this year, I wrote in The New York Times–I’m beginning to sound like Paul Krugman, who cannot begin a column without saying, “As I warned the world in my last column…” — a highly favorable Op-Ed about McCain, taking Rush Limbaugh and the others in the Right Wing Sanhedrin to task for going after McCain for being insufficiently conservative. I don’t–still–doubt that McCain’s instincts remain fundamentally conservative. But the problem is otherwise.
McCain rose to power on his personality and biography. He was authentic. He spoke truth to power. He told the media they were “jerks” (a sure sign of authenticity, to say nothing of good taste; we are jerks). He was real. He was unconventional. He embraced former anti-war leaders. He brought resolution to the awful missing-POW business. He brought about normalization with Vietnam–his former torturers! Yes, he erred in accepting plane rides and vacations from Charles Keating, but then, having been cleared on technicalities, groveled in apology before the nation. He told me across a lunch table, “The Keating business was much worse than my five and a half years in Hanoi, because I at least walked away from that with my honor.” Your heart went out to the guy. I thought at the time, God, this guy should be president someday.
A year ago, when everyone, including the man I’m about to endorse, was caterwauling to get out of Iraq on the next available flight, John McCain, practically alone, said no, no–bad move. Surge. It seemed a suicidal position to take, an act of political bravery of the kind you don’t see a whole lot of anymore.
But that was–sigh–then. John McCain has changed. He said, famously, apropos the Republican debacle post-1994, “We came to Washington to change it, and Washington changed us.” This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget “by the end of my first term.” Who, really, believes that? Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis. His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?
Then, Christopher Hitchens, erstwhile former Nation columnist turned Iraq warrior, writes a column headlined: “Vote for Obama: McCain lacks the character and temperament to be president. And Palin is simply a disgrace.”
Like Buckley, Hitchens is embarrassed by McCain as a candidate and as the man who has attempted to put Sarah Palin one heartbeat away from the presidency:
Hitch argues deliciously that:
McCain occasionally remembers to stress matters like honor and to disown innuendoes and slanders, but this only makes him look both more senile and more cynical, since it cannot (can it?) be other than his wish and design that he has engaged a deputy who does the innuendoes and slanders for him.
I suppose it could be said, as Michael Gerson has alleged, that the Obama campaign’s choice of the word erratic to describe McCain is also an insinuation. But really, it’s only a euphemism. Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear had to feel sorry for the old lion on his last outing and wish that he could be taken somewhere soothing and restful before the night was out. The train-wreck sentences, the whistlings in the pipes, the alarming and bewildered handhold phrases–“My friends”–to get him through the next 10 seconds. I haven’t felt such pity for anyone since the late Adm. James Stockdale humiliated himself as Ross Perot’s running mate. And I am sorry to have to say it, but Stockdale had also distinguished himself in America’s most disastrous and shameful war, and it didn’t qualify him then and it doesn’t qualify McCain now.
The most insulting thing that a politician can do is to compel you to ask yourself: “What does he take me for?” Precisely this question is provoked by the selection of Gov. Sarah Palin. I wrote not long ago that it was not right to condescend to her just because of her provincial roots or her piety, let alone her slight flirtatiousness, but really her conduct since then has been a national disgrace. It turns out that none of her early claims to political courage was founded in fact, and it further turns out that some of the untested rumors about her–her vindictiveness in local quarrels, her bizarre religious and political affiliations–were very well-founded, indeed. Moreover, given the nasty and lowly task of stirring up the whack-job fringe of the party’s right wing and of recycling patent falsehoods about Obama’s position on Afghanistan, she has drawn upon the only talent that she apparently possesses.
It therefore seems to me that the Republican Party has invited not just defeat but discredit this year, and that both its nominees for the highest offices in the land should be decisively repudiated, along with any senators, congressmen, and governors who endorse them.
These are important statements, especially as expressions of concern about McCain’s dwindling capacity and their dismissals of Palin.
They form the intellectual underpinnings for a rational rejection of the Republican ticket by mainstream Republicans and independents–and with it the prospect (though not the certainty) of an Obama victory sufficient to allow him to actually govern.
Buckley actually provides the language for those who may not ever be Obama enthusiasts, but who may be Obama voters:
“Obama has in him — I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy “We are the people we have been waiting for” silly rhetoric — the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for.
“So, I wish him all the best. We are all in this together. Necessity is the mother of bipartisanship. And so, for the first time in my life, I’ll be pulling the Democratic lever in November. As the saying goes, God save the United States of America.”

There’s nothing of this country to be salvaged and even Obama, though I completely support him, won’t be able to make a difference. How the hell people can’t see that is beyond me. To continue to support THE moron and now support his intended successor shows only that they’re so afraid of learning the truth that they’ll never take their heads out of the sand (i.e., their asses). How could you possibly justify imprisoning yourself and your loved ones in the world as created by THE moron and to be continued by McCain and that dumb fuck Palin is disgusting. The only consolation is that you’ll end up suffering the consequences just like the rest of us.
Margaret says
From the WSJ (a real news worthy paper, quite different than Rolling Stone):
Obama’s 95% Illusion
It depends on what the meaning of ‘tax cut’ is.
One of Barack Obama’s most potent campaign claims is that he’ll cut taxes for no less than 95% of “working families.” He’s even promising to cut taxes enough that the government’s tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% — which is lower than it is today.
AP
It’s a clever pitch, because it lets him pose as a middle-class tax cutter while disguising that he’s also proposing one of the largest tax increases ever on the other 5%. But how does he conjure this miracle, especially since more than a third of all Americans already pay no income taxes at all? There are several sleights of hand, but the most creative is to redefine the meaning of “tax cut.”
For the Obama Democrats, a tax cut is no longer letting you keep more of what you earn. In their lexicon, a tax cut includes tens of billions of dollars in government handouts that are disguised by the phrase “tax credit.” Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand no fewer than seven such credits for individuals:
– A $500 tax credit ($1,000 a couple) to “make work pay” that phases out at income of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple.
– A $4,000 tax credit for college tuition.
– A 10% mortgage interest tax credit (on top of the existing mortgage interest deduction and other housing subsidies).
– A “savings” tax credit of 50% up to $1,000.
– An expansion of the earned-income tax credit that would allow single workers to receive as much as $555 a year, up from $175 now, and give these workers up to $1,110 if they are paying child support.
– A child care credit of 50% up to $6,000 of expenses a year.
– A “clean car” tax credit of up to $7,000 on the purchase of certain vehicles.
Here’s the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be “refundable,” which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer — a federal check — from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. Once upon a time we called this “welfare,” or in George McGovern’s 1972 campaign a “Demogrant.” Mr. Obama’s genius is to call it a tax cut.
The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.
The total annual expenditures on refundable “tax credits” would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as “tax credits,” the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is.
The political left defends “refundability” on grounds that these payments help to offset the payroll tax. And that was at least plausible when the only major refundable credit was the earned-income tax credit. Taken together, however, these tax credit payments would exceed payroll levies for most low-income workers.
It is also true that John McCain proposes a refundable tax credit — his $5,000 to help individuals buy health insurance. We’ve written before that we prefer a tax deduction for individual health care, rather than a credit. But the big difference with Mr. Obama is that Mr. McCain’s proposal replaces the tax subsidy for employer-sponsored health insurance that individuals don’t now receive if they buy on their own. It merely changes the nature of the tax subsidy; it doesn’t create a new one.
There’s another catch: Because Mr. Obama’s tax credits are phased out as incomes rise, they impose a huge “marginal” tax rate increase on low-income workers. The marginal tax rate refers to the rate on the next dollar of income earned. As the nearby chart illustrates, the marginal rate for millions of low- and middle-income workers would spike as they earn more income.
Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned from working overtime or taking a new job. As public policy, this is contradictory. The tax credits are sold in the name of “making work pay,” but in practice they can be a disincentive to working harder, especially if you’re a lower-income couple getting raises of $1,000 or $2,000 a year. One mystery — among many — of the McCain campaign is why it has allowed Mr. Obama’s 95% illusion to go unanswered.

You can hate on her, that is cool. However, saying she is unqualified just makes you sound like an idiot. It makes sense that McCain picked her, he is pro choice and far too liberal for some Conservatives. She panders to the far right. Just like Obama picked the ‘safe white old guy’ to pander to his folks. It is politics.
