yesterday i had a voice lesson- a singing lesson- a practice the scales, pick apart a song, stretch the vocal chords lesson.
"let your stomach hang loose!" "relax your throat." "remember to breathe!"
and i blushed (it is kind of mortifying!). and i sang. and i felt pure joy.
an over the hill, grown up, motherless daughter, mother of two, singing show tunes like i was going to be the next big thing on broadway.
it was completely uplifting in the goofiest of ways. and i listened back to a tape of the lesson and i cried because i could hear happiness in my voice.
as most of you know, my spirit has been dampened recently.
but after yesterday i know it is not gone.

I am so happy for you. Singing gives me joy too. I am glad you were able to find joy though song. (Ok, thats enough schmaltz for one day.) I used to sing in a choir from elementary through high school and have been thinking about joining an adult choir recently because I remember how great it made me feel.

I waited in excitement to see my first episode of Whatever Martha! to get to Alexis. Nearly all I saw and heard was Jennifer. She so upstages Alexis and looks into the camera constantly. Please speak less. Silence is golden Jennifer. Alexis, you are so entertaining. May we hear and see more of YOU.
Emmy says
The gays have known for a very long time that showtunes can help mend broken hearts. Sing alot during the holidays – especially to the Broadway channel in your car – while watching for the MTA bus and branches, naturally).
em says
I enjoyed that last post of you singing. Post another in the near future–it was fun to hear. Maybe you could make-up a jingle for the blog & sing it? An idea. A lot of your fans respect you–remember that when people start w/the comments. Thanks.

not the paper bags
MGE to Patricia Rule says
You may find Alexis entertaining but one of the reasons you hear Jennifer more on the TV show is because Alexis is not a natural in front of the camera. Unlike Martha, it is evident that Alexis is not comfortable on television. Not saying she can’t get better but it all depends on how motivated she might be. Regarding Jennifer looking directly at the camera: the show is not “Charlie Rose” where two people are talking to each other without directly engaging the audience. “Whatever, Martha” is all about sharing the joke WITH THE AUDIENCE, therefore looking at the camera IS THE THING TO DO. Alexis need to do that more often.
Dianne says
You go girl! I love singing too.
When should we expect a youtube video? I’d love to see you in action. Whatever’s Idol in the making!

I am so glad you said”listen to the tapes” because this is something I would encourage everyone of you to participate in — NPR is sponsoring A National Day of Listening. The day after Thanksgiving NPR is encouraging folks, young’ ins to record a conversation with someone they love– more details on their web sight and what to do– but the Blog the other blog I visit. the Ocracoke Island Journal mentions it and a link. I well don;t do links– I have enough challenge with the keyboard alphabet not to add to my confusion with cutting and pasting maybe next year but anyway National Day of Listening this project . an off shoot I believe of the StoryCorps national archive project well Please look in to it People A Good day never let it rest until the good is better and the better is Best!
Annette says
I am so glad you found an outlet that really makes you happy … I’m looking for one myself.
For Patricia Rule says
Hi Patricia Rule! Welcome to Whatever World. We the rabid fan base don’t usually all agree on anything. Your way off topic comment stood out. You may rest assured that Miss Stewart speaks just as much as she feels like speaking. Perhaps you saw a show that had been edited toward more of Miss Hutt. FYI; ALL of this season’s Whatever Martha shows are already taped and edited. Please stay tuned, as I’m positive that anyone in their right mind will keep this highly entertaining show alive and on the air. It may metamorphose into some altogether different show, or the format may stay the same. In any case we the viewers come out as the lucky ones. The Whatever Ladies have an email account that they may or may not read, and they may or may not forward suggestions for improving what is already a winner to “the powers that be.” Peace and good luck to you Patricia Rule, you’ll need it, we all do!

Alexis twin is coming out again says
Yes Jennifer life will go on without Bunny. You will feel happiness again, and don’t feel guilty about it, enjoy life. Don’t let it pass you by. I still don’t like Rosie, she is nuts. Talk about someone zoning in on a Mother’s dead, it’s time for her to grow up.
Rebecca in Raleigh says
🙂 So happy that you felt the stirrings of being alive in your heart. It’s not mortifying in the least… joy is a message from your soul!
hi jen says
over the hill? WTF? You have a very distorted view of yourself young lady!
Lisa says
Oh, who cares?
Momphd2 says
Jennifer,
This is what you need. You need to find and do what will help you feel better. Its also a great way to channel your emotions. Your family who loves you and looks to you for inspiration and support will benefit from this as much as you do. Enjoy it!
to Velvet Pants says
Try a hair brush first. Use a really dense one (the cheaper the beter in this case). Brush your pants downward on the leg and then you can use a lint roller brush to finish…good luck
Andrew R. (Martha Moments) says
Beautiful, Jenny! I know the feeling of finding joy when you least expect it – and how freeing and surprising it is. Of course you cried.I would too.
PS: My dad’s tests came back several weeks ago and the “cancer” believed to be in his throat was just scar tissue. Thank god.
Jill says
Why don’t you stop feeling sorry for yourself and quit asking for sympathy. You’re not the only person on earth who has lost a parent.
Enough already.
Kristin F. says
I’m so happy to hear that, Jennifer! Keep singing, girl …
Jack says
Hey Jill, that head injury still bothering you eh?
an observer says
So there we have it. A human being purportedly named “Jill” can read a blog post and display complete lack of empathy and apparently no tolerance for anyone else’s feelings than their own. Dear Jill, you must be in a terrific amount of pain and turmoil to contribute such a deeply lonely and mean spirited comment to this otherwise uplifting thread. We all know pain, dear Jill. Thank you for sharing yours.
Please says
More Weight Watchers, less “voice lessons”. If it didn’t happen, its not going to.
Farzad says
Jennifer, Singing ALWAYS makes me feel better! i get in my car, turn up my favorite song (depending on what mood I’m in) and sing like the people in the other cars can’t see me. it is such a gratifying experience. I’m glad to know that you have found something to lift your spirits. Keep belting it out!!!! ….I know I will!
h from Bos says
I had an idea contact Rosie…you can do a performance on her new show.. I am not kidding. Give her a call it might be fun. my son is doing the Macy day parade and the Rockefeller Center tree lighting with the band this week. So we are having an early thanksgiving dinner to accommodate the fact he is here in Boston this week and will be in NYC for the actual holiday. I have to guess the band and crew will be doing something down there.
Kathy says
Jennifer, singing is great medicine for the heart. Keep it up! My favorite places are the shower (of course) and my car on the NJ Turnpike. I love watching you an Whatever Martha. You crack me up and remind me of my friends. Also from experience, the pain will subside with time, the memories will never fade and some days will be better than others. Stay funny!
What's the SIRIUS tree look like this year girls? says
Pics please…
also SIRIUSXM stock was a 16cents a share low a few days ago..what is up with that?
Nick says
Regarding stock prices. I hope that you took that low as a buying opportunity. And what’s up with that you ask? It’s the Bush gang’s FCC thugs dragging out the merger among other things. The Republican administration’s FCC even censored the words “shit” and “goddamm it” from a recent PBS broadcast of a tribute to Leonard Bernstein. Words that were part of a song that you would have had to actually KNOW the words were there to even understand them. Shame on the FCC and shame on PBS for bending over and taking it up the ass. They even pixelate out the “naughty bits” of paintings and statues on their art programs so as not to corrupt or offend those that are corruptible and subject to being offended.
@Nick says
Nick, you’re kidding right? You think SiriusXM is a good buy? Its a good buy if you want to lose money. The company is heading straight for Chapter 7. All its outstanding shares will literally worthless. Between now and then, it will be picked-over by short-sellers. Look at the charts – classic short manipulation. There is no upside to that company.
Simon says
Wow Nick, not only do you not seem to understand the stock market, but you remarks about the FCC are factually incorrect as well. It was actually the DEMOCRATIC members of the FCC that were holding up the merger; the 3 Republican members of that committee all approved the merger, while the democratic members opposed it. The vote was 3-2 (3 Republicans, 2 Democrats). Further, the Bush-controlled DOJ approved it almost immediately. Look it up. Sorry to shatter your world view.
Nick says
Republicans, Democrats, once they work for the government they’ve sold their souls to lobbyists. My understanding or lack of understanding as you would have it Simon, of the stock market has stood me in good stead. Not broke, never will be. The FCC whoever is running the show has certainly not stood up for anyone other than their well funded special interests. Practically no more independent radio, television, newspapers; all of this manipulated by the FCC, Republican thugs Democratic thugs, a thug is a thug. Happy trading Simon.
Christine says
Jennifer you are soooo adorable, and just know that your spirit will come back to visit you again….:)
calvin says
Jennifer, sing, sing, sing from the roof top!!!!
