Have you ever seen “Real Housewives of New York”? Your mom looks just like Jill Zarin’s mother.

How much weight can one expect to lose (even temporary) while doing colonoscopy prep?

It’s so great you and Alexis did this. My 46 year old cousin just died last week from colon cancer; diagnosed a year ago and at that point was already stage 4 & had spread to her uterus and liver. She has three young children. No family history. Scary. For some reason I thought a colonoscopy wasn’t covered by insurance until you are 50? I’m 37. But her death and now you gals getting testing has definitely put this more on top of mind for me. Thanks. 🙂

JEN: you know have a cancer history. your insurance will pay for it. when my sis got cancer, and found out by accident at 37, all of our cousins ran to the doc for a colonoscopy. it covered by insurance. it skipped 1 generation on my dad’s side, we told our md’s and gi docs. they said not to worry, you won’t get cancer. the nice sister did. and bad. get checked. JENNIFER HUTT: you had a polyp. it takes 2 years for it to turn into cancer. you have to get it checked next year again. sorry. your mom had cancer. you know have a family history. check with your doc. some docs prescribe a baby aspirin every day. it makes the walls slippery so polyp can’t adhere. but you must get it checked. really hilarious video. mom mum peed in her pants watching it. thanks for spreading the cancer checkup word.

I had colon cancer at age 46-luckily it was caught before it spread. My children are told that they need to be tested at age 35 since it can run in families. (My maternal grandmother and aunt had it) I take the pills for the prep- the first time I had the drink and can still gag thniking about it( I am a baby about these things, though.) The pills aren’t great, but they are much easier than the drink-in my opinion. Insurance will cover the colonoscopy at any age if your doctor presents it correctly-family history, symptoms, etc. Glad you are fine, Jennifer

Jennifer,
I lost my beautiful 57 yr old father to colon cancer five years ago. I’ll never be the same. He was misdiagnosed as having irritable bowl- a colo was not recommended by his Dr. This fabulously lax Dr. dismissed his symptoms as he seemed to be a perfect picture of health. So please everyone, get checked!!! Thank you girls for sharing your experience and raising awareness.

curious in pa: did the prep less than one month ago. had a bad time with it. mega poopies. lost a whopping 11 pounds in water weight. that never ever ever happened before. gained all but one pound back the next day after drinking and eating. actually, it was kind of cool and i’m not a fat pig.

I didn’t realise once you had a polyp removed that you had to go back every year and get it checked?? I thought once it was removed that it was over? How come the Doctor never told me that? I was told every 5 years from now on???
cancer sis chris said says
my sis went to columbia presbyterian hospital in nyc. they said she was so young, it should be every year for everyone in our family who has a polyp to get scoped. now, my inlaws go to hip (very crappy health insurance). they had polyps. told them to come back in 3 years. i said what, they’re old. the ny doc said that it takes 2 years for a polyp to grow into cancer. in his opinion (and he just specializes in that area), go every year. problem: most insurances won’t cover it. you can always tell your doc that you are bleeding from the rectum. that shuts the insurance co up. 5 years is wayyyyy toooooo lonnnnng. love australia.
