wow. i was leaving work yesterday and saw a HUGE line of women waiting on 48th street for the new kids on the block (who were set to arrive some 18 hours later!). it has to be nostalgia that interests all these women. right?
i mean, i get it. i was 18 and obsessed with the nktob. i had my moment of flirting with donnie walberg in a club on boston’s lansdowne street. but now i am 39 (boys in the band range in age from 36 to 40) and seeing them all grown up makes me feel even older as do some of their song lyrics: "she’s like baby, i’m like swayze" who other than someone our age would get the reference?!
i’ll admit watching the nkotb on the today show is making me smile, but i am not feeling like the groupie i once was!
are you?

…. sigh ….. still recall seeing Aaron Neville play at Tipitina’s in New Orleans, almost thirty years ago
but living is most definitely about MOVING ON

Totally agree with you – I was a huge fan in high school…bought tickets to their reunion tour last fall, but ended up not going. We’ve grown up, but their new songs sound like their old stuff (similar lyrics etc) and I’ve just outgrown them – though they are still nice to look at…jordan and joe have aged really well ;)!

Saw them in Denver in November & it was way more fun than it should have been. An arena full of MILFs and gay guys having a great time…we all move on, doesn’t mean you can’t look back once in a while. PS – totally jealous that you got to flirt with Donnie…

let’s hope you still aren’t feeling like the groupie you once was! That would be creepy.

Just have to say that I am 23 and completely get the reference (dirty dancing) and loved NKOTB, yes I was not born/ very young in the 80’s but had an older sibling that made sure I was a true 80’s kid.

i hated nkotb and was way too cool to like them. but as a gift bought my sister tickets to see them when they toured (ca. 1990), i ended up taking her and for some ungodly reason was screaming and loving the show as much as her and all the other fans. i will only admit this here.

I love them and their concert was amazing. My friends and I had such a great time. The stadium was packed btw and the concert in July is sold out so I wont be able to go. Im 31 married and pregnant and my husband thinks its funny but is happy im having fun.

I remember living in Montreal and my “little” cousin Lauri coming to visit so she could see them – I think she was 17 in 1990!! Had a great time at the concert and I became a fan after that!!

LOL – so, so true. What did you expect? She’s an overgrown child

I loved NKOTB when I was a kid and I’ve seen the reunion tour twice! Its amazing! The first show was the 3rd of 3 sold out shows in Toronto Ontario Canada back in September and the 2nd was just on March 29th in London Ontario Canada. Both shows were unbelieveable!! It is so much fun to relive your youth, and scream your head off with other people doing the exact same thing. Even my 14 year old niece asked to go to the show so I took her to the 2nd show I went to and she had a great time too!!!
Maritza says
I think you are right, its definitely nostalgia. I went to their concert and I absolutely LOVED it. It was one of the best concerts of my life. I even thought about going again for their summer tour but then I heard about their cruise event and for some reason the magic was gone. They’ve always said that they are doing this for the fans and at the beginning it felt that way but when I heard about this cruise and saw that the prices can be in the thousands (up to like $5000 per person) I can’t help but feel like they are taking advantage of our nostalgia and love for them.

I agree with you Jennifer–I am smiling seeing them and enjoy remembering how obsessed I was….but, I have no desire to become that obsessed again!!!! They kind of creep me out a little when they sing the old songs…

I understand being a music fan. I was the cheif engineer for 3 years at WALI Adelphi and a short stint at WGBB. I rubbed elbows with some of the stars then. The funniest was tiny tim (last tine i saw him was in Boston a month before his death). When I went to see Don Rubin at Colpix I got to see in the elevator Ed Sullivan andhad a short conversation with him. SO it was no big thing to see clebs. Now my son gets us into any gig we want. It is funny I saw Bruce and talked with Van Zant, Saw Billy Joel and had interesting stories, Pete Seeger, Harry Chapin and his brother, Ringo and Devo. AT first (expect for Harry who passed years ago but I correspond with his daught Jen and brother tom) you see the age and feel old. Like Jen was a 6 year oldthen with her Dad Harry and now married with kids, Devo all in their 50’s but still have the energy on stage, billy Joel well he looks like his Dad (as part of his act he says he is his dad billy will be out later), all in all the faces and bodies change but the energy and whatever it is that you liked many years ago it is still there. You still feel awed in thier light. Pete Seeger always looked old but he is just as spry as in the 60’s and has the same banjo. We love them because they hit something in our lives. I just remembered in Freeport in 62 I did a gig and Jimmy Dean borrowed a quarter from me to call his manager. Hmm that debt should be worth a buck by now. My wife remembers having lunch with Pat Boone (his kids Nanny was her friend). See so many memories. SO act like a kid and be a fan (don’t tell Alexis she hates fans). WHo knows we may be at the same events – we usually are right at the stage among those younger but not anymore of a fan than they are. I don’t know how many times I played the yogi song (Barry schwartz was the bass and used to come by the radio at WALI). I bet your Dad has stories to tell in the Kamasutra days with Don. Be a fan it is good for you and don’t let anyone put it down.

Jenn, can you post a pic or video of you working on your pedicure. I think you have the sexiest feet. You are always barefoot on the show, and that drives me, and I’m sure a lot of other men nuts.
Thanks in advance sexy,

Never was a NKOTB fan, but I LOVED NSYNC…. I went with a friend to the NKOTB concert last year trying to recapture some of the boy band magic feeling. Didn’t work for me. They are so cheesy!

No offense but I never got the boy band thing. I didn’t like any of them. The closest I came is that when I was about 10 – 12 years old I liked Michael Jackson and Duran Duran. For fun we went to see Duran Duran a couple of years ago so I can relate to seeing the older women lined up like that to see them. It was hilarious to see all of these people that crawled out of the woodwork from the ’80’s. Some people looked like they were just wearing period costumes but there were a good majority of people that were absolutely, 100% stuck in that time and never moved on. They had the whole frizzed out mullet with hairsprayed bangs, acid washed denim tuxeedos, Olivia Newton-John glitter and Headbands, oversized paisley or color blocked shirts, orange blush, super long leather studded belts, purple eye shadow, suede ankle boots… Just think “Pretty In Pink” on acid. It was so entertaining. My friends and I would go up to some of the worst to compliment them on their outfits and ask where they got them just to see what they would say. These people were dead serious about their looks. What I hear though is that this was absolutely tame compared to this Bret Michaels concert that we had here last weekend. Apparently some of the groupies that were lined up to get onto his tour bus were quite the eye full! Very sad to see 40 year old women still throwing themselves at bands.
