baking for camp visiting day. baked brownies from nick malgieri’s chocolate book AND blondies from the recipe on the back of nestle’s milk chocolate chips bag.
also decided to try my luck at blueberry/raspberry hand pies (using the berries i picked at martha’s house!) and i made from memory a blueberry/raspberry crumble with the leftover filling…and some crumb topping.
here are the blondies.
and then packed for freezing.
brownies. (used bberry phone)
blondies and brownies were both successes.
but.
the handpies…well… although they tasted good…DISASTER!
and out of the oven.
here it looks kind of cute.
i dont have a picture of the crumble but it turned out ok.

Hi, Jennifer! Looks good! MAY we please have the recipe for the hand pies?
Andrea says
Ha! I think the handpies look the tastiest! So what if they were a little messy? I’ll have to try those; I’m sure mine won’t be much neater. We’ll just call them rustic.
Anna Banana says
The hand pies look good. Toss them on some vanilla ice cream! I hear you though; it would be nice if they had held together. Cute idea.

yummy.jenn.your kids will love them

Jennifer: You never, ever use any product by Nestle. The chocolate is nasty and there is a recall on their cookie dough.
Ms Elso says
Dear God. Those handpies look like baby seals – post clubbing season.
HollieinTN says
Hell. I’d eat it.
Loquaz says
I’m guessing the pies could have used a bit less filling and a bunch more crimping around the edges for a tight seal. But they still look tasty good!
JRT says
Too much liquid in the fruit. You didnt listen to Martha’s Pie segment that gave tips on how to reduce liquid when baking with fruit. One tip was to dry the fruit out by baking it on a roasting pan with some sugar at low a temp to evaporate the liqiud out of the fruit and into the sugar. Or I quess you could have added more cornstarch to the fruit.
brian0523 says
I’d still eat those hand pies!
Emmy says
Why are they called “hand pies”? Is this a northern thing? In the south I think they are called “fried” pies. Interesting!
raquel says
omg, i wish i had one of those right now with my morning coffee!

I understand the term “hand pie” but it still sounds kind of wierd/gross. I think you should call your version “calamity pies”.
Melanie says
I think the hand pies look absolutely delicious!

Why is the dough all blotched with red? Alexis would NEVER do that…LOLOL…just kidding. 😉

Makayla,
The mess was the point she was making…………
I like that Jennifer is messy. Alexis is such a clean freak so you need Jennifer to balance that out.
Its the Yin and the Yang.

Jennifer, You really did a lot of baking. I think they all look great. The hand pies, we’ll, after many years of cooking and baking myself, berry pies for me, anyways always look like yours in the picture, but they were still great right! The little hand pies take a lot of practice, like perogies, if you have mastered them , your good. Thanks for a new web site as well. Pictures were great and thanks for sharing. Did everyone like everything?Amy
Julie says
Why don’t you leave the baking to Alexis? You aren’t very good and you look like you’re just trying too hard to be like her. Give it up. Find your own thing.

love the idea of the hand pies – am going to give the recipe a try. thanks for posting! the sour cream dough sounds tasty and doable.

The website you got the recipe from looks just plain dodgy. It’s no wonder the hand pies didn’t work.
Food Historian says
Where did this notion of individual servings come about? Let’s think back on this fortieth anniversary of Man walking on the moon. NASA I say instituted the individual portions for the astronaut in outer space. can you imagine an entire cherry pie floating about in the space module not so much any way– I say go back to the whole pie– okay the lunch bucket for the guys in the field needing a pie to hold in one hand to eat while out on the back forty okay– but how many are working the back forty these days?? anyway you will see mini bite this and that thank NASA but I say Pie Day and serve it up with a smile and the kids learn to wait their turn and they say please and thank you on Visiting day. it is all about gratitude and realizing you did not stop off at Walmart on your way to the event to buy a cardboard tasting offering.
Tricia (OH) says
Only thing missing here is the vanilla bean ice cream over those warm handpies. :oP Made me think of Grandma’s blackberry cobbler fresh out of the oven w/milk (my fave). As kids we would help her pick the berries down by the rr tracks. Seemed like a million berries (& chiggers). Just enough for one huge cobbler in a lasagna pan. We would gobble it up for lunch & dinner because it never lasted long enough. I’ll email my address, you can send those handpies to me. :o)
Ms Elso @ wondering says
Psycho? Maybe. Alexis? I can only dream of achieving her level of fabulousness. Or Jennifer’s.

Now that your BIL’s garden is probably in full-bloom, I’d love to see updated pictures of his bounty! Does the family find they are using a lot of the harvest?
Sonja says
Well done. I think you overfilled the hand pies just a bit. Did you glue the edges with egg? Good try, as long as they tasted great, thats the goal. Caught your hint that you guys were not live today, I figured it was time for you to visit the kids. Hope they are having fun.

Oooh, Ranier cherries…my favorite. Their season is just about over. This week,Safeway has them for $3.99 a pound — down from $7.99.
Jenn, everything you baked looks “good enough to eat!” The chocolate brownies look moist and yummy!
