if you haven’t already, read Kate Christensen’s other novels – they’re much better than Trouble. In the Drink, Jeremy Thrane, and The Epicure’s Lament (have yet to read The Great Man) are favorites.

Jennifer-
“The Senator’s Wife” Sue Miller
“American Wife” Curtis Sittenfeld
“Sweet & Low” by Rich Cohen is a great saga of a Jewish family that created Sweet & Low sweetner. It’s an excellent read – very, very funny – captures Jewish family life in NY perfectly!!
Susan says
Try some of Debbie Macomber’s books. The Blossom Street series is heartwarming. My mom is now hooked on them and it is her goal to get every one of her books. And there are many. I just read Queen Takes King. Good read.

You need to read At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream by Wade Rouse. Hysterical! His prior book is also great. Also any books by Jen Lancaster. Laugh out loud funny.
Jenny says
Dear Jennifer-
For the first time I read your blogs, even though I am a big fan of the show. I will say that I agree with you about your feelings regarding cancer, I lost my mother almost a year ago. I can’t express to you how much we are on the same page.

Hi Jennifer – Check out Pretty in Plaid by Jen Lancaster and Driving Sideways by Jess Riley. They both fit in the great/fun reads category. I’m pretty sure both are available for Kindle.

I LOVE my kindle app on my iphone! Isn’t it amazing getting a book in seconds…. instant gratification!

Don’t waste time or money on Dan Brown books. They are very poorly written. It’s a shame, because his topics are interesting.
Kelly says
Not a fun book, but an uplifting, wonderfully inspiring memoir – “True Compass” by the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy. I love it. Can’t seem to put it down! Enjoy!

One other suggestion:
“Shadow In The Wind” by Carlos Ruiz…beautifully written and a great read.
Elaine says
Anything by Marian Keyes. She’s an Irish author who writes about women, both about friends and other relationships. Very topical stories and with a hint of Irish humour.
“This Charming Man” is written from three women’s perspectives and each woman has a different font… it’s an unusual format at first but I was sad when it ended because I wanted to read more.
“Angels” is about the culture shock a young Irish woman experiences when going to stay in LA for a month.
blackbird says
don’t waste your time on any more than one dan brown. they are formulaic and repetitive. you have to read “the girl with the dragon tatto” and the sequel “the girl who played with fire” and whatever the third will be called. this awesome guy died leaving three manuscripts and they are awesome. sex, intrigue, mystery, spies, all good. tell alexis, too, she’d love them. I am so sad this author is dead. I want more from him.

I want a Kindle so bad. I just finished a great book Best Friends by Martha Moody and if you have not read it yet Julie and Julia is a great book also.
Jamie in CA says
I think you would like Jane Green. They are fun chic-lit books. The first one I fell in love with by her was Jemima J and she has many more after that.
amy jo says
traveling mercies by anne lamott. non-fiction. she is someone who you might like.
THE FLORIST’S DAUGHTER By Patricia Hampl
books by Tracy Kidder- he is non fiction also. his book about paul farmer is amazing. it makes you understand how intelligence, being really smart, is the greatest gift.
and plainsong — did you read that yet? i dont remember the writer, i loved it.
Karen says
Read “The Gold Coast” by Nelson DeMille…nothing like his other books – you will laugh out loud at the dialogue, and it’s a great page-turner…I don’t know what you’d call that on a kindle :o)
Mere says
Ivanka Trump read John Jakes, North and South…you might try that…if you do, let us know…I ordered it; it’s 800 pages! It better be good!
Leslie in Seattle says
I just got a Kindle for my birthday and am loving it too!! A really good book that I read recently is “American Wife” by Curtis Sittenfeld. It is loosely based on Laura Bush…a story from her point of view and tries to answer the question “What was she thinking??” Another good book that is a little lighter and a fun read is “Garden Spells” by Addison Allen. Just a sweet story with a little bit of drama, but nothing stressful! Happy Reading!
Debbie says
Anything by Nicholas Sparks!
Elisa says
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Don’t let the silly name of this book make you want to hurl. It’s just lovely, and sweet, and perfect for bedtime so you’ll have good dreams. A quick and memorable read that I promise you won’t regret. Promise.
Carla says
Have you read any Jen Lancaster? HILARIOUS. I loved Bitter is the New Black and Such a Pretty Fat. She’s no Pulitzer Prize winner, but very entertaining.
V. Williams says
Does the kindle hurt your eyes? My eyes get really tired looking at a computer screen and I’m wondering if the kindle would have the same affect on me.
As for a great book to read try “Love’s Executioner”. It sounds weird but it’s fascinating.
Heather in LA says
Did anyone suggest Kathy Griffin’s new book? All about her childhood (lonely), her gay best friends, eating disorders, desperation to belong/fit in, seeing Rhoda on the MTM show and feeling validated and understanding her role as the sidekick. I think you will really like it.
Jo says
ooh The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a fantastic book but is probably not for Jennifer. Alexis yes, Jennifer no, no, no.
Linda says
I like the way Wally Lamb writes and constructs a novel. The Hour I First Believed was well worth the time.

Don’t get drug into the Dan Brown hype . . .
You might really enjoy THE IMPOSTOR”S DAUGHTER by Laurie Sandell. It is a true graphic memoir about growing up with a narcissistic and kind of delusional father. Sandell is the artist as well as the author.
Such a great twist on reading a novel. I just finished it – couldn’t put it down.

Just got a recommendation from chef Nigella Lawson called Bad Mother. She said it’s really funny and honest. She was sorry when it ended!

Just bought Dan Brown’s book. My bookclub is reading South of the Board by Pat Conroy…hope it is good. Going to the beach next week and wanted a couple of books to read!
Londa says
Water for Elephants is an engaging and wonderful book, but now that I think about it, I may have gotten the recommendation from your blog. A friend also turned me on to Waiter Rant, which is a memoir of a waiter in NYC. It’s an excellent read and makes me appreciate those in food service that much more.

Hi Jennifer,
Love your show and blog first of all. Keep up the great work.
Second I don’t know if you like really light reading but if you do might I suggest any book by Laura Levine and any book by Mary Kay Andrews. My favorites from those authors are “Deep Dish”-Mary Kay Andrews and “Killing Bridezilla”-Laura Levine but any book by those two are great. Happy reading!!
Laura says
If you have not read A Tree Grows in Broklyn by Betty Smith, I would highly recommend it. Despite being written in the 20’s(?) it feels very timely.
I have to third The Shadow of the Wind.
Carla again says
I forgot to mention “The Little Giant of Aberdeen County”. It was really interesting.
Allison says
I’ve wanted to read THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED for a while now, but haven’t. I’ll get around to it because I’ve enjoyed Wally Lamb’s books. Haven’t read the others you’ve mentioned, but I’ll have to check them out. Oh and I definitely recommend THE DAVINCI CODE. I read it a few years ago (I want to say 5 years ago?) and loved it.

Jennifer Weiner books are a must read. If you are looking for fun/funny books, check out Janet Evanovich’s Plum series. They start out with One for the Money. Grandma Mazur is hillarious. Another beach read is the Sophie Kinsella Shopaholic series.
