that was so wonderful, simple and so informative, thank you and congratulations on a wonderful garden, what did you use for fencing and is it tall enough to keep out the deer? also , how far down did you bury it? I am relaly inspired and radishes are my husbands all time favorite.
What variety of tomatoes do you like to grow?
:0)
Boy you guys really use your hands when you talk. Nice garden but it needs water.
so great..wish I had the room..when I wasgrowing up my dad didt he same thing in westchester cty ny..we had chickens & a garden..
You are a lucky lucky girl!! My garden is confined to herbs and tomatoes. Will David come to California?
As far as the taste of what you grow…I’d like to know how different the taste is between eating it out of the yard and buying it organically from Whole Foods. I suspect that the taste buds can discern a notable difference, but just curious.
Thanks for the great video tour. It was really informative. I would love to see more videos of you actually pulling it from the ground and harvesting it and preparing it for the table.
The garden looks beautiful!! Do you split all the veggies between your family and your brother-in-law’s folks, or do you include your neighbors in the harvest too?
Impressive. I wish I could have a garden.
“Boy you guys really use your hands when you talk. Nice garden but it needs water.”
And mulch! Especially around the eggplants and taters. Trust me on this! The asparagus and raspberries look great, though. Nice work on those.
Any chiles in there? If not, GET TO WORK! 😉
I am so jealous – that is my dream garden. How many families is David feeding with that bounty?
Lucky you & your family. I so want to grow some veggies. Even if it’s just lettuces and tomatoes. Next year perhaps. Thanks for the video.
Is Dan now the producer of your radio show, or the producer of the talk show, or the producer whatever martha, or the producer of the garden. What about Pauley?? Does Dan work for you or Sirius…please answer a few questions..
Fantastic garden , your brother in law is very personable, please keep us updated
@sammy
dan pashman is co-producing the radio show with paul kodila. michael king is also staffed on the radio show. dan works for mslo, paulie works for sirius and i think michael works for mslo.
david steinberg is the ep on the new talk show on hallmark set to start in september. whatever, martha!’s 3rd season is being produced by kathy egan…and will air on hallmark in january.
there you go!
Do you amend the soil with any minerals? I vaguely remember Martha, years ago, interviewing someone at a farmers market who had, according to Martha, the most phenomenal tasting strawberries. The farmer said she added some kind of mineral to the soil which made the cell walls stronger and the berries sweeter. Do you have any idea David?
david steinberg as in the comedian from years ago, turned producer. cute short, now probably gray, love him if its the same guy. THANKS FOR ANSWERING ALL QUESTIONS
You brother in law obviously loves it…must be fun for him! Wait till those artichokes bloom! WOAH! I never knew they were flowers till a couple years ago. You will be eating well!
My garden is, um, about the size of ONE of those boxes – the only amount of space my husband and boys will give me right now…
Haven’t heard the show in over a week. Some kids broke into my car and took my Starmate. 🙁 Nice guard”gated” CA community, huh? School’s out and suburban kids cause mayhem…grr…the little device won’t get them 2 dollars, but it took away some of my fun! I’ll get them!
Have fun in your garden!!!
T with twins in CA
I don’t seem to be able to get your videos. Could you tell me what I need to do. They sound great and I hate to be missing sanything.
I LOVE THE GARDEN!!!!!
Great garden, would love that if I had space here. @Emmy, once you grow your own produce it’s hard eating anything else (even organic) from wholefoods – you get to actually taste what things are supposed to TASTE like. Lovely!
What happens with the asparagus over winter (for the first 3 years), does it get cut back in fall, or just left as is until next spring/summer? I’m an asparagus growing virgin.
That garden is amazing. I’m thinking you might have to set up a stand out front to sell your harvest! Guess it’s time to start thinking about all the canning and freezing and etc so nothing goes to waste! SO SO GREAT!
Your brother in law seems so informed and fun. I learned a lot. Have him on more please.
Fauna means animal life! Do you see any animals in this video?
Alos. your arm gesticulations are beyond ridiculous – get a job working the tarmac if you want to keep flapping around like that. Thank GOD I dont know you in real life – you’re one of the most annoying eejits EVER!
So fun!! loved the video
Your garden is a true labor of love. Thanks for taking the time to make the video and hope you’ll do another update or two as the season progresses. Wishing you lots of sunny days and just the right amount of rainfall.
I love it!!! I wish my garden was that big.
Wow! nice. Where is the “like” button on the blog? Because I really like this.
debs
Jennifer, please update your Gallery photos.
Love the garden, David.
Obviously not annoying enough for you to get on with your own life! Alos….???? spell check please.
But at least you knew what fauna was – good for you.
very very nice Garden…
Is this what you needed that Cabbage Patch album for? That’s a scream. I couldn’t imagine why you would subject yourself to it, but this makes sense now.
Wonderful segment makes me long for someone to help me here…. Aside from the yucky looking tomato cages any ideas on staking and how much room do you need to grow peas ?
hello. @ Isabel: Peas can grow on the ground or among twigs. Better to have them going up something tho. Staking tomatoes you can use sticks, twigs whatever until they get taller and then you’d need a cage. The cages are the best thing to use, despite the fact you say they look “yucky”. They are life-savers. Jen, love that music. What the heck is it? I’d love to make a video for my dad of his garden with that music. he’d love it. Thanks for this! And P.S. keep using your hands to talk. Of course some idiot would have to comment on it.
I am really hoping that David has the time to show us what he is growing in every one of those squares. How does he choose what flowers to grow in with the vegetables? Is everything from seed or does he use transplants? Does he use a grow light in the basement when he starts from seed?
What a great addition to your already wonderful blog, Jennifer. Thanks.
Love it, thanks for sharing!
I want……. Can David come to California and plant (or show me how to do it) it too?!
and by the way the garden is fantasic
Wonderful video – thank you for posting it! The garden is a very ambitious and generous undertaking – including the raspberry bushes. Congratulations to David on the garden -well done.
Really enjoyed seeing that garden. My friend across the street is doing the same. I didn’t know that about aparagus. Thankyou for sharing:)
Did you overwinter the banana? or is is newly planted…
BEAUTIFUL! MARTHAT MUST BE PROUD !
How long has your brother in law been gardening?
Wow…that garden is cool! Must take a lot of work, but well worth it I’m sure!
David, how do you keep birds away from the raspberries, tomatoes, etc.? We have CDs hanging, pinwheels blowing, fake owls, you name it but they go right on pecking. Before I finally bird netted our caged tomatoes I wrapped each tomato in a white paper towel and secured it with a clothes pin to cover them up, PITA. Now the little peckers are going for the red bell peppers.
I thought I saw a composter in the previous photos. What kind is it and do you just have to hand crank to distribute material?
Finally, do you just rely on rain for water or do you have a drip system? I’m envious if it’s rain as we have to drip twice a day here in the hellish 112 degree weather.
Thanks for the info.
Good soil and lots of hot weather really help a garden grow on Long Island. We have clay soil and cool evenings so our tomatoes don’t do that well. And, Dave, keep using your arms and hands and ignore the ignorant.
Nice garden, but what’s with the music?
Dave’s use of his hands to talk isn’t a problem. He does it naturally and it looks completely normal. So, no criticism there. It’s Jennifer who is using exaggerated arm moments for some reason. And it looks awkward and weird. What you need, Jennifer, are honest people around you who will tell you the truth so you don’t make a fool out of yourself. The ass kissers aren’t helping when they shower you with false compliments. But, please, feel free to consider me ignorant and ignore me all you want if you don’t agree.
Great Video! David has really done a wonderful job of creating and maintaining his garden. Thanks for sharing. Love the Cabbage Patch music.
@Just to clarify…what you need is a life…and probably some fiber since you seem like a rather miserable person.
Your brother in law is so awesome! What a nice guy. The garden looks amazing – i wish I had room in my yard for something that big.
Jennifer you look great!
She would love a couple of these critters…
they eat live foods like flies and stuff and even pieces of meat sometimes and you hardly have to care for them.
She would love a few of them I bet jennifer
don’t you have a HERMIT CRAB seller as a fan fron NJ too?
get her a couple of those as well..
What materials do you use to steak the raspberries and tomatoes??
Wish you would post photographs. I can never get your videos. Garden sounds wonderful . . . from the commentary.
@Heyimbecile, if you only knew what you were talking about. Without fauna, the insect kind and the myriad of animal life that live iin the soil which in that ecosystem allow plants to grow and flourish, there would be no flora. And even though David didn’t get a chance to explain that, there indeed was flora and fauna in the garden, which makes Jennifer absolutely correct in her intorduction. But I have to agree with you on the hand gestures although I wouldn’t have phrased it so mean with someone as cute as Jennifer. Jennifer, didn’t know you were part Italian. Maybe we’re related. I see a sturdy fence and a short brick wall surrounding the garden. Assuming its to keep out critters like deer, rabbits, and groundhogs. Are the stakes that secure the fence pounded into the ground or attached to the brick wall, and if its the former, how deep did you lay the stakes, and where did you purchase the small mesh fencing? Need to fence my garden and looking for similar components: U channel or T stakes, and small mesh fencing because I’ve seen baby critters squeeze their way through the smallest of places.
Def. not a Martha garden…but at least he’s making an effort.
off topic
My mom is dying of brain cancer. I have found hope in your posts. I would welcome any tips or help, she has about 4 months to go.
Hey Jen! Here’s a GREAT new website! https://www.vibrators.com/
Hi Jen, I agree in some ways with the advice that you need someone to let you know when you are off the mark. It’s especially important now that Alexis seems to be glamming up her image and when placed next to you, she makes you look short, dumpy, frumpy and decidedly middle aged. Better camera positioning, lighting and WARDROBE could improve on this VASTLY. You need an expert who knows how to make you look great! Don’t let Alexis do this to you 🙁
I am so happy for you and yet maybe slightly green with envy that you have so many delicous healthy veggies right at your fingertips. I would give anything to have all of those raised beds to work with. About the asparagus… I remember Martha did a segment on asparagus a few years ago where she also mentioned that it takes several years before the first harvest. In her segment, she actually dug under the ground to get to her white asparagus. Have you ever heard of that?
Hey Jennifer~
The garden is awesome. I so wish I had the room or wisdom to have a garden like that. I can barely get tomatoes to grow. BTW, you look FABULOUS! You seem to have lost weight. What did you do to lose it?
I love to see what Alexis bakes. She amazes me with the amount of work she puts into her goodies. She is more like her mother than she cares to admit.
Have a great week~!
How people turn a little project video about gardening into a chance to act like savages against each other is just beyond me. As for “clueless in Chicago” not being able to get the videos…rather than expecting people to custom design their website especially for you, did it ever occur to you to update your video software? It’s not that hard to get Quicktime or something that will play .mov files?
https://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
That was so enjoyable!! Great music too.
What a wonderful garden. Okay..you asked for questions. First, how did you find out how to start this garden? Are there any vegetables that shouldn’t be grown next to each other?
Also, I’d sure love to see a video on you digging and starting a small garden for someone who wants to start one in their backyard. You know a starter garden. Is a raised bed better than one that isn’t?
I want so bad to start a garden, but don’t know what steps to take first.
Thanks Jennifer and Dave for the video!
This was so enjoyable. Your brother-in-law is the BEST. He should keep doing videos like this as a regular segment I think. He’s relaxing and informative to watch … his passion really shows. Thank you for sharing.
Thantks for sharing. Very impressive..we love eating off of the land..enjoy!
Great garden! I look forward to seeing the responses to the questions people asked. I am impressed with the whole operation.
