Thanks Dr. Drew for always making me feel better. You are a terrific doctor!
Dieting is a constant way of life for me… and frankly for most of my friends too!
I have maintained my weight loss so far for about three years. And it takes great effort.
There are days I eat healthfully- meaning fruits, vegetables plus lean protein and other days I put so much garbage in my mouth I cannot believe it.
Food shame still exists for me as does my love of the poptart.
One thing I have found that works well for me lately is to alternate “cleansing” with regular food days- so I have a couple of NON consecutive days a week where I eat a whole lot less than the other days. In a way this is similar to the concept of the fast diet but often I use juice companies to help me do this.
My two favorite juice companies are Love Grace and Ritual Wellness.
Both companies make super yummy drinks that have the right break down of nutrition facts for me.
And both companies ship! I adore JJ Virgin. Her The Virgin Diet book is fantastic-her plan is STRICT but if you do it, then I am certain you will feel incredible. She also has a great sense of humor. And my favorite protein powders on the market come from her! A little less strict but always wise information comes from my girl Joy Bauer. She is the most pragmatic nutrition person I know. She realizes we are all going to eat what we want so she tries to manage our wants! And to that end, my friend Hungry Girl (Lisa Lillien) always has the best lower calorie recipes you can find.
My colleague and friend David Kirsch also makes a terrific line of supplements and snacks. He ships too!
Exercise is also EXTREMELY important to my weight maintenance and here’s why… when I get the schpilkis out of my head during exercise, I calm my emotions and subsequently, most of the time, will eat less.
Of course exercise is also necessary because it strengthens all muscles including my heart, and burns some calories, but the mental impact is what matters most for me.
I was making treadmill videos for about a year- haven’t in quite some time- plan to again!
and yes! I do love my treadmill still. It is made by True, got it from the gym source years ago (they are the best place to buy equipment- no joke- my family has used them for over 20 years!!) and really if you’re going to own a piece of exercise equipment the treadmill is definitely what to own.
I lay out my exercise clothes each night so when I am up early I’ve no choice but to throw them on and get on that damn machine! I am always happier when I have moved my body. You will be too.
My weight fluctuations are somewhat brutal:
I can go up and down a full three pounds day to day- but I weigh myself each day so that the upswing never gets any higher.
How do you (or dont you?!) maintain your weight?!
xo
Jenny
P.S. My kids come home from camp soon. I cannot wait! hope your summer has been full of joy!

Hi – amazing pic and proud to say, a long time follower. I think you named 5 exercises/intervals to do for 30 seconds or 45 seconds when you had David Kirsch on the show. Can you give us the sequence again?
Jenny says
I will post them in this comment shortly.

WeightWatchers is my key to weight management. Lost 50 lbs, gained back 40 and list that. Been stable for 3 years now. Exercise and routine for meals is what helps me also stay in control. When I have a bad day, my mantra is “forgive yourself for not being perfect and move on” also “nothing tastes as good as thin feels”.

Hi Jenny!!! I’m a new fan, LOVE watching you on Dr Drew!!! You Dr Drew and Mark are the sounds of reason on his show. managing weight I find to be very difficult. I am not an over weight person. But I can always lose 10 lbs, in fact, I’m always trying to lose 10 lbs. I go down 14 and l gain back 7 etc etc. Two years ago I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. Since mine is not weight related its genetic. I use my fitness pal to watch my calorie and carb intake. Low calorie, and high fiber are my best friends as well as staying around 150 carbs per day. (Total carb-total fiber intake=150 carb). I eat every 2-4 hours to keep my insulin levels stabilized so I don’t feel hungry. I also exercise 4-5 times per week. I have been able to manage my diabeties without any type of medications thus far. A diabetic diet is really just a health every day way of life that everyone should follow and that does include desserts:) you look fabulous!!!!! Hope to hear your thoughts. All the best Melanie

Been there Jenny also! I made the decision in my thirties (now 61) to stop dieting! I eat 3 really healthy meals a day and healthy snacks (been a vegetarian for 31 yrs) I exercise everyday and lift weights…. Once you make that decision and eat good food all the time you really won’t want the wrong foods. Hang in there! <3

I lost 65lbs. over the last year and a half and have been maintaining since about April. I exercise everyday, run/walk, yoga mainly, but also try to be active with my 3 boys. I have to say that exercise is great for maintenance, but I use it mostly to get the demons out as I like to say. I still keep a food journal everyday, but give myself a little more leeway on the weekends. I only weight myself every 2 weeks or so, and mainly use my clothes to as my guage. I’ve found the key for me is consistency, not will power. I’ve learned to trust my body and know that if I eat too much for a day or two, my body naturally wants to cut back for a couple of days. I wish I had learned that lesson before I was 43, but better late than never. I’ve also learned that when I do eat too much, it takes 2-3 days to get mentally back on track and stop obsessing and beating myself up. I just try to let the feelings pass and stay active. I don’t think the struggle will ever end, but it’s good to know that habits can change and the diet rollercoaster can stop!
p.s. I miss your old time slot by the way. I tried listening to Martha, but all it made me want to do was slit my wrists – soooooo boring!!!!!!! 🙂

I think it is sad that you “cleanse” (we all know that is code for severe calorie restriction) several days a week instead of following a consistant balanced diet.
I juice daily but as a way of adding nutrition to the meals i have, not instead of actual food.
Your public sharing comes across as an endorsement for others to follow your lead

Hey Jenny, I LOVE my treadmill too! My kids make fun of me but I have religiously walked on it 5 days a week for an hour for 20 years!!

Believe it or not, giving up diet soda helped a great deal and until I gave it up, I didn’t realize how addicting it had become, and I would literally cry when grocery shopping because I couldn’t have it anymore at first. However; I sleep better, headaches are gone, and oddly enough I don’t crave super sweet things like I use to. I did have a soda a few months ago but didn’t finish it, just tasted weird to me after all that time.
So the conclusion I’ve come to is: Soda is evil, especially if you’re trying to maintain weight.
