On the plus size actresses who came before her:
Chrissy Metz: …Melissa McCarthy, Gabby Sidibe, Rebel Wilson all the women who are unconventional or “plus size” if you will, curvy, all of that, they’re like pioneering this way that art is finally catching up to life. And women and people alike are seeing themselves on TV and in movies.. and I love that with Melissa it is never an issue about her weight, it’s like “you’re freaking hilarious and talented let’s talk about that.” So eventually I think that will happen for me. And right now I think it’s so important that we’re having these conversations because when you’re knowledgeable about something the fear goes away, and so many people are like afraid of fat people.
It’s crazy and I hate to say that but until we educate people, until we figure out what the real issue is people are going to be afraid of it. So I am so happy and grateful that those women and men alike, although it’s much it’s much more acceptable for men to be overweight.
Jenny Hutt: Have you met Melissa McCarthy?
Chrissy Metz: I haven’t met Melissa yet!
On body shaming fat and thin actors and performers:
Jenny Hutt: When you see too thin actors or models what do you think?
Chrissy Metz: Right, so it’s the other side of an issue, a disorder a problem. It’s concerning because it’s more about the mental, being unhealthy mentally and emotionally. That’s what’s concerning. I don’t know their plight, I don’t know their issues and it’s very easy to say “oh she’s too skinny” or you hear people say that I’m too fat or I’m too whatever. So I would hope that there’s conversations about it. Hopefully it’s not an issue… I know Kesha was given so much grief about her weight, and like she looks great! Leave her alone. And she’s healthy.
Jenny Hutt: What about Lady GaGa’s being fat shamed at the superbowl?
Chrissy Metz: Ok, THAT made me bonkers, bananas, crazy. How is someone fat if they’re not fat? I want to see someone else get on that damn stage and do what she did! … I think what happens and really what the core of the issue is that we project all of our stuff and our crap onto other people. And if we’re really really genuinely happy with ourselves and love ourselves, you can’t talk sh#* about other people. You can’t be hateful because you love yourself. And we are extensions of each other. We are all connected.
Best celebrity encounters:
Chrissy Metz: Recently Niecy Nash approached me at the Golden Globes and we’re friends and we’ve had lunch and she’s so talented and just a genuine person. Kerry Washington runs by and she’s like “I love you!” Reese Witherspoon She’s like “My daughter and I watch your show, we love you!” Mandy (Moore) and I were at a dinner together, Nicole Kidman is like “Congratulations!”…
